Q2 Employee Recognition Awardees Named Education and Student Life recognized the following individuals for outstanding performance. These individuals were recognized by a committee of their peers during the February 2010 quarterly meeting of the division.
Rhonda Ferris (Student Health Services), Suzanne Smith (Counseling and Psychological Services), David Howell (Creating Collaborative Care), Katie Blaylock (Wellness Center), Misty McKee (Enrollment Management), not available. Selected comments from individuals submitting nominations and the peer committee were included in the presentation by Dr. Shaw at the quarterly meeting. She mentioned the following about Rhonda Ferris. She is caring and compassionate with her student patients and provides the sincerely empathic support we would all like to receive when we are ill. She greets students with a smile and a friendly word to put them at ease, no matter the reason for the visit. In introducing Suzanne Smith, Dr. Shaw provided the following comment from the nominations. Suzanne is friendly, open, and cheerful. She brings energy and enthusiasm to her work. She is unfailingly kind and goes out of her way to help students with scheduling and other issues, even when the students are distressed and are not kind to her in return. Suzanne also shows support for staff members. She takes on large and small duties and has great initiative in problem-solving. You will never hear her say that something "is not her job." She is just quietly effective. In speaking about David Howell, Dr. Shaw provided this insight. David Howell epitomizes the essence of this award. Although his plate is full, he never declines the opportunity to work to bring social justice, diversity and awareness to the faculty, staff and students of the Medical University of South Carolina. Mr. Howell continuously goes the extra mile to assist anyone. There is never a task too great or small for him to perform. David has a giving spirit that is always willing to help in any way that he can, and I am proud to work with such a professional individual who truly complements the Division of Education and Student Life. Dr. Shaw’s comments about Katie Blaylock clarified why she was a worthy recipient. Katie enthusiastically embraced and promoted the Wellness Center's new TRX Suspension Training & Group Exercise Program and is one of its key instructors. She voluntarily instructed a demo class for interested individuals that ultimately resulted in class participations and additional revenue generation for the Center. Katie has also been cited by kids participating in the Kids Camp as being their "favorite" camp counselor. She greets the children by name with enthusiasm and makes fitness camp activities fun. Dr. Shaw noted that Misty McKee consistently provides noteworthy support in generating reports across campus with this excerpt from the committee notes. I have given Misty requests 30 minutes before I need them and she has come through time and time again. No matter how stressed out I am by last minute requests she helps me to feel confident in her ability to provide whatever is needed. She has even gone above and beyond to provide additional information that will help support information for reports she is running. Congratulations to these individuals on being recognized for outstanding service to Education and Student Life and MUSC.
