MUSC extends climate commitment to Commencement Graduates to wear new eco-friendly regalia by Jostens
Choosing to lead by example, Medical University of South Carolina will extend its commitment to environmental sustainability by graduating in Jostens new eco-friendly graduation regalia. In making the decision, the Office of Enrollment Management considered the desire for students to celebrate the MUSC graduation tradition, knowing that their graduation attire was created with the utmost concern for the environment. Approximately 650 students debuted the new caps and gowns at graduation ceremonies held on May 20, 2011. These have been used at every event since.
The fabric used in the new regalia was developed using 100% acetate material, selected after an extensive evaluation of various options by Jostens. Based on scientific research, the fabric is proven to decompose in soil in one year. In addition, the coil zipper tape and teeth are made from 100% recycled PET. Earth-friendly packaging contains material that facilitates the decomposition process of the cap and gown bag. This regalia also offers students an additional way to support the environment through a unique Student Give Back Program. When a student redeems their regalia hang tag code online, Jostens will contribute $1 to support environmental sustainability.
