Buff Receives Award from The Duke Endowment

In collaboration with the SC Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC), Scotty Buff, Ph.D., received a 3-year, $442,103 award from The Duke Endowment. Scotty is the director of Junior Doctors of Health and an instructor in the Office of the Assistant Provost for Education and Creating Collaborative Care (C3)

Through a comprehensive approach that targets elementary and high school students, teachers, parents, and MUSC students, the project will measure student health status, fruit and vegetable intake, and sedentary screen time in elementary school students.

The grant funds successful programs including a weekly teacher exercise program coordinated by Janis Newton, Director of Programs, MUSC Wellness Center. The funding will also pay for new initiatives such as a Mentoring Academy at Burke High School to expand the program’s academic pipeline from K-12th grade and extension of the SC AHEC Teach the Teacher Academy to develop obesity prevention curriculum in elementary classrooms.

The project reflects a strong partnership with Junior Doctors of Health, C3, SC AHEC, and the Charleston County School District to empower underserved students to take control of their own health and to educate others on the importance of healthy eating and exercise.

Junior Doctors of Health will be delivered state-wide through the SC AHEC and C3 interprofessional service-learning project.
