The award recognizes an MUSC employee for work in encouraging and influencing diversity. Sheridan was chosen as a result of her dedication to promoting a spirit of cooperation which encourages diversity and diverse learning while enriching the lives of our students and the people they serve. Since the program’s inception, MUSC students have contributed an average of 10,000 hours a year in service to the local community. Willette Burnham conveys that, “During the awards ceremony, Mrs. Lavelle Higgins summed up the accomplishments of this year’s recipient as “REMARKABLE”. I could not agree more. The coordination and oversight of MUSC Gives Back is a huge responsibility. I am pleased that Liz Sheridan, and the work she has been committed to for over a decade, is being honored in this way. I applaud her work and tireless energy.” The Earl B. Higgins award has been presented annually since 1995 and was established in honor of Higgins, who served as director of affirmative action and minority affairs at MUSC.
