Following a national search and selection process, George Ohlandt has been named the new Executive Director of Enrollment Management.  Most recently, George has served as the Director of Admissions and Operations for the Office of Enrollment Management. During this interim year without an Executive Director, Mr. Ohlandt has often represented the Office of Enrollment Management on the Education and Student.

In this new role of Executive Director, George will direct the activities of the Office of Enrollment Management to include Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Office of the Registrar.  He will also assist in evaluation and assessment functions for the entire Division of Education and Student Services. He will be responsible for developing processes and systems that maximize customer service, quality and efficiency in collaboration with the six University colleges and other academic and student support services.

“Team building,” replied George when asked about his goals coming into this new position. “Taking a team approach to customer service will allow us to be more consistent and to add depth in providing services.  Developing closer bonds and better understanding within the three units will support this effort.”

In his new role, he will serve as a resource to the Associate Provost for Education and Student Life and Vice President for Academic Affairs on issues related to admissions, financial aid, graduation, student and academic information systems, and academic policy.

“Technology is a small piece of information systems.  The interface between humans and computers is of particular interest to me…. How we design systems to take advantage of that interface will allow us to better serve our customers.”

He described his strategy for implementing these technology and service goals in this way: “Evolution, not revolution. We need to bring change on gradually, but steadily.”

Mr. Ohlandt received a Bachelor of Science degree from Presbyterian College with a major in biology and minors in both computer science and chemistry. He earned a Master of Science degree in Zoology from Arizona State University and more recently completed an Associate Degree in Information Technology at Trident Technical College.

He attributes his selection of graduate school to the personalized attention he received from a student services employee at Arizona State University.

 “She knew who I was when I called.  She didn’t make the decisions, but she cared.  That goes a long way.”

George has worked at MUSC since 1993 in positions of increasing responsibility.  He began his career at MUSC as a biomedical researcher, then as an information systems analyst, progressing to department head and now senior administrator within the division.

When asked to describe himself, George shared, “I’m a Charlestonian, proud of my lowcountry heritage.  I’m a country boy, who is close to his family.  If you want to see me smile, ask me about my wife’s cooking.”
