Adventure Out: Turning Over a New Leaf

Adventure Out is a month-long outdoor fitness campaign to encourage residents to visit city parks for exercise. Exercising outdoors or “green exercise” has many additional benefits to indoor fitness activities, including stress management, improved self-esteem and mood, increased frequency of exercise, and improved sense of well-being.

For the month of May, the best fitness instructors at MUSC Wellness Center will pair up with the prettiest landscapes in Charleston city parks to entice you to get moving in the great outdoors. The Adventure Out program features more than 25 offerings, including Zumba dance, yoga, boot camp, circuit, historic selfie scavenger hunt and more to help you turn over a new leaf and discover the benefits of green exercise.

When: The whole month of May – more than 25 free fitness activities to pick from with the purchase of an Adventure Out T-shirt ($10) or tank top ($15). Classes include games, Tae Bo, Calisthenics, HARDCore, Boot Camp.

Where: Offered in Charleston city parks includng Hampton Park, Colonial Lake, Customs House, Maritime Center, Brittlebank Park, Family Circle Stadium, and Cannon Park.

Adventure Out Family Fitness Day: The kickoff event will be May 3, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - at Hampton Park with food trucks, activities for kids, Zumba (11:00am-12:00pm), and family fun fitness games. FINALE at Hampton Park 12:30-2:00pm including 12:30 - 1:15pm  Zumba (James)  1:15 - 2:00pm  "Super Hero Strength Circuit" (Nicki Carter) This will include various superhero-themed strength stations and cardio components.: "Batman Burpees", "Superman Sandbag Squats", etc.

Why: Because research shows outdoor or ‘green exercise’ delivers powerful health benefits and the City of Charleston Recreation Department, Lighten Up Charleston, MUSC Wellness Center and MUSC Office of Health Promotion want to make it easier for you to use the outdoors to be healthier.
