CONSTITUTION OF THE STUDENT ALLIANCE FOR HISPANIC HEALTH OF THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
Article I. Name
Section 1 This organization shall be known as the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health (SAHH) of the Medical University of South Carolina.
Article II. Purpose
Section 2 The purposes of the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health are the following:
- To facilitate the exchange of information and ideas between students, faculty, and staff of the six colleges of the Medical University of South Carolina to better meet the needs of the Hispanic community of Charleston
- To facilitate communication between MUSC and community wide healthcare organizations that serve the Hispanic community
- To take action to improve the quality of health care programs provided to the Hispanic community and academic programs provided to healthcare professionals and students who serve the Hispanic community
- To sponsor and participate in events and community service projects to promote the health and well being of the Hispanic community of Charleston including health care services, cultural awareness, student needs and recruitment, and research
Article III. Membership and Dues
Section 1 Membership in the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health is open to all students.
Section 2 There shall be no dues unless the organization designates an amount for that year by a majority vote of 2/3 members present.
Article IV. Officers
Section 1 The officers and Executive Committee of the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health of the Medical University of South Carolina shall be a President, a Vice President, a Secretary, a Treasurer, and an SGA representative.
Section 2 Duties and Powers:
(a) The duties of the President shall be to preside at all meetings, to appoint committees, and to chair the Executive Committee. He or shall be responsible for the overall operation, finances, and continuity of the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health.
(b) The duties of the Vice President shall be to assist the President in the execution of operations, act in lieu of the President if the President is unable to perform the duties of the office, oversee the development of organization members, and conduct a constitutional review and/or update at least every two years of the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health.
(c) The duties of the Secretary shall be to keep accurate records of the minutes and proceedings of the organization, manage correspondence on behalf of the organization, and be responsible for the accuracy and effectiveness of the organization web page of the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health.
(d) The duties of the Treasurer shall be to collect monies administered or received, keep accurate and complete records of all monetary transactions, oversee fundraising efforts (unless a Fundraising Committee is appointed), and develop and maintain an operating budget of the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health.
Section 3 Elections of Officers
(a) Elections shall be held by ballot before April 1st.
(b) Only members of the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health who have maintained membership for 1 semester or more shall be eligible to hold office unless a candidate is nominated by the Executive Committee.
(c) All candidates for executive offices shall be nominated or self-nominated by ballot and given the opportunity to decline from nominations.
(d) Newly elected officers should be a part of all correspondence between executive officers and attend all related meetings on or after April 1. As of May 1, the newly elected officers will assume active duties and powers.
Article V. Faculty/Staff Consultant/Advisor
Section 1 The selection of an advisor is at the discretion of the Student Alliance for Hispanic Health.
Section 2 All registered student organizations are required to have faculty/staff advisor. This person must be a full-time University employee.
Article VI. Meetings
Section 1 The Student Alliance for Hispanic Health shall meet once per month or as decided by the Executive Committee.
Article VII. Quorums
Section 1 To constitute a quorum to make decisions about Student Alliance for Hispanic Health business requires at least 50% of the members to be present.
Section 2 If there is not a quorum, members present can vote by 2/3 majority to expedite decisions by allowing all members to vote electronically via email.
Article VIII. Constitutional Amendments
Section 1 Proposed amendments shall be submitted in writing and read at a member meeting and shall be acted upon at the following meeting.
Section 2 The constitution may be amended by a majority vote of 2/3 of those members present at the meeting.
Article IX. Ratifications
Section 1 A 2/3 majority of those present at the first meeting of the newly formed Student Alliance for Hispanic Health will be necessary to ratify this constitution.
