About the Alpha-1 Genetic Counseling Center
The Alpha-1 Genetic CounselingCenter provides telephone-based free and confidential genetic counseling for individuals considering being tested for, or diagnosed with, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1). The Center also provides information and referrals to resources for parents, family members and medical professionals.  Sara Wienke has been the Alpha-1 genetic counselor since May 2012. 

National Society of Genetic Counselors (2006):

Genetic counseling is the process of helping people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial contributions to disease.  This process integrates the following:

  • Interpretation of family and medical histories to assess the chance of disease occurence or recurrence
  • Education about inheritance, testing, management, prevention, resources and research.
  • Counseling to promote informed choices and adaptation to the risk or condition
