2010-2011 Events

March 31, 2011: Faculty Jeopardy

Our chapter's annual Faculty Jeopardy competition lived up to its legacy this year as local chapter faculty members tested their knowledge in categories created by MUSC students including obscure physical diagnosis findings, medical eponyms, and blood borne illnesses among others.  Our competitors included the reigning champion, Dr. Stephen Schabel (Dept. of Radiology), Dr. Jennifer Young (Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology) and Dr. Nicholas Batalis (Dept. of Pathology).  Students, house staff and faculty members were entertained as the first two rounds of competition featured repeated surges by all three competitors, and it was not until Final Jeopardy that Dr. Stephen Schabel definitively retained his title of MUSC Faculty Jeopardy Champion.  Please join us in congratulating Dr. Schabel for this incredible feat!

March 18, 2011:  Spring Banquet

On the evening following Match Day, members and guests gathered in downtown Charleston for a banquet held to honor our chapter's current members.  The evening was highlighted by a keynote address from MUSC's Dr. Lawrence Mohr, a decorated Army veteran and former physician to United States Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, Sr.  The evening also provided an opportunity to individually recognize our chapter's newly elected faculty and housestaff members, as well as the following award recipients: Dr. Margarita Murphy (Volunteer Physician Award), Katie Mitchum (Hiram Curry Award) and Daniel Pasko (H. Biemann Othersen, Jr. Award).  Mrs. Mary Ann Snell, our chapter's Executive Assistant, is deserving of a great deal of praise and appreciation for her tireless efforts toward coordinating such a memorable evening!

March 17, 2011: Match Day 2011

Match Day 2011 coincided with St. Patrick's Day, and the members of the Class of 2011 were hoping for a touch of the Luck of the Irish as they awaited their turn to discover where their next chapter in training would occur.  Please join us in congratulating the recently matched members of the Class of 2011!

February 25, 2011: Oyster Roast

Our monthly chapter meeting was held at the beautiful home of Dr. and Mrs. Gillespie, where members enjoyed the unusually warm winter weather.  AOA members and guests were treated to a traditional Charleston treat, as fresh local oysters were steamed and served alongside a wonderful selection of beers from some of America's and Europe's finest breweries.  Notable business conducted at the meeting included the selection of the following new house staff and resident members to South Carolina's AOA Alpha Chapter: Dr. Deborah DeWaay (Attending Physician, Internal Medicine), Dr. Steve Andreoli (Resident Physician, Otolaryngology) and Dr. Tom Theruvath (Resident Physician, General Surgery).  Also of note, Katie Mitchum, Class of 2011, was selected for the Hiram Curry Award, and Dr. Margarita Murphy was selected for the Volunteer Physician Award.  Much gratitude is owed to Dr. and Mrs. Gillespie for hosting the wonderful chapter meeting.  The guests left raving about the evening with the hopes that a similar event might be held again next year!

December 3, 2010: Happy Holidays

Members gathered at the home of the South Carolina AOA Alpha Chapter Councilor, Drs. Chris Pelic, and his wife, Dr. Christine Pelic, for the December chapter meeting.  The evening was fitting for the season as members and guests came dressed in holiday attire and brought gifts to be donated to the charitable organization Toys for Tots.  Guests spent the evening sharing holiday cheer in the Pelic's beautiful home, while enjoying a wonderful meal and delicious sweets prepared by the hosts.  Many thanks to Drs. Chris and Christine Pelic for hosting our December meeting!

November 11, 2010: Annual AOA Scotch Tasting

The annual AOA Scotch Tasting was held at the James Island home of Dr. and Mrs. Steven Schabel.  After a wonderful meal prepared by the Schabels and time enjoying the company of other AOA  members, AOA President Chris Ayers began the meeting by discussing upcoming AOA events.  Afterward, Dr. Schabel commenced with his time honored tradition of delivering a lecture on anything and everything related to Scotch.  After fielding a few questions from the crowd, Dr. Schabel provided Scotch from his own collection for the crowd to taste.  The event was indeed the annual crowd favorite, as it always is, and we thank the Schabels for hosting us this year!

October 16, 2010:  New Member Picnic Meeting

The annual New Member Picnic was held at the picturesque Sullivan’s Island home of Dr. and Mrs. Harry Clarke. New and old members enjoyed meeting each other and socializing while admiring breathtaking views of the Cooper River. An excellent meal was served by the hosts, with many members making multiple trips through the serving line! Chris Ayers, AOA President, conducted a brief business portion of the meeting. All members were formally introduced, and future chapter endeavors were discussed including the upcoming Scotch tasting, service project ideas for the year, the Spring Banquet, and participation in the 2nd year physical diagnosis course. A good time was had by all, and we are thankful to the Clarke’s for opening their beautiful home to the chapter!

September 22, 2010:  New Member Election Meeting

The annual AOA student election meeting was held at the lovely downtown home of Dr. Jennifer Young, faculty member and former chapter President. A social time of seeing friends and reconnecting with fellow AOA members was enjoyed at the beginning of the meeting. A delicious meal was cooked and served by Dr. Young, which left the entirety of the chapter with little doubt that a career as a chef is well within Dr. Young’s grasp. After dining, Chris Ayers, AOA President, called the meeting to order. The election criteria and formula were explained, and the conversation quickly turned to the impressive group of candidates. After much lively discussion, 10 junior and 24 senior AOA members were elected. Many congratulations to the new members, who will be welcomed at the New Member Picnic and inducted at the Spring Banquet!

August 20, 2010:  First-Year Medical Student Orientation

Robert Glass, AOA Vice-President, briefly addressed the incoming first year students on the mission and activities of the local AOA chapter. The students were reminded of the clean slate each of them brings to medical school, criteria for AOA election, and AOA activities of benefit to them this year. Dr. Christopher Pelic, AOA Councilor, followed with an enlightening lecture on professionalism in medical school.

August 5, 2010:  Annual CV Writing Workshop

Tom Smith, PhD of the MUSC Center for Academic Excellence and Writing Center once again conducted the annual AOA CV workshop to a roomful of attentive medical students. Pertinent advice on perfecting CVs was enjoyed by all, and future applications were surely improved thanks to Tom’s known writing acumen and passion for teaching!

June 28, 2010:  Third-Year Medical Student Orientation

In a daring break from recent tradition, the AOA Executive Committee elected to conduct a session on writing SOAP notes in lieu of the traditional “Day in the Life” lecture that has been previously delivered. Students were divided into groups based on the first clerkship they would be starting in July, and AOA members led each group in a tutorial on how to write a SOAP note for that particular service. Initial feedback from students noted the practicality and hands-on nature of the sessions. The event could not have been accomplished without the dedication of many AOA members, and it is surely something to be continued in the future!
