June 28, 2012: Dr. Othersen's Book Signing at the Charleston Library Society

Dr. Bieman Othersen, Professor Emeritus of Pediatric Surgery,  past Councillor, and local historian has published a new book entitled "Centuries of Care in Charleston County" and will sign copies at the Charleston Library Society, 164 King Street, Charleston. In this very personal, profusely illustrated coffe table book, Dr. Othersen tells a fascinating story of the development of medical care in Charleston from the earliest days up to the present, a period of over 340 years.

Summer Issue of the Pharos: Satara Brown receives a Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Scholarship sponsored by the national Alpha-Omega-Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Satara, a member of the rising Junior Class, will be carrying out her research studying the effect of myocardial infarcation on the peripheral cardiac conduction in mice, under the mentorship of Dr. Terrence O'Brien, Director of Cardiovasular Clinical Research at MUSC.

May 9, 2012: Meeting to Elect Officers

The election of new officers for MUSC's AOA chapter was held at Dr. H. Biemann Othersen' home. The elected officers were:Melissa Allen - President ; Thomas "Adam" Criswell - Vice-President; Conor McLaughlin - Secretary.

March 17, 2012: Annual Banquet in Honor of New Members

The MUSC Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha celebrated the induction of new members with their annual Spring Banquet to honor the new inductees on Saturday, March 17. The banquet was held in the Emerald Room at the Charleston Marriott Hotel and was extremely well attended, with participation of numerous family members of our students elected to AOA.  The guest speaker was Mr. Doug Herbert, NHRA National Champion and Founder of B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe).

February 17th, 2012: Oyster Roast, Beer Tasting, and Elections

The February meeting was held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Boyd Gillespie on Friday, February 17th at 6:30 p.m.  Dr. Gillespie offered an oyster roast and beer tasting.  The business portion of the meeting meeting was dedicated to the election of new alumni, faculty, and housestaff members and to the selection of recipients for the Hiram Curry and Volunteer Physician Awards. 

January 26th, 2012: AOA Cook Off

Dr. and Mrs. John Ramey opened their beautiful home to our Chapter for our second annual AOA Cook Off and Spring Business Meeting.  Dr. Jeff Cluver and AOA Chapter President Bobby Yawn took home first place prizes for their respective appetizer and dessert dishes.  After enjoying myriad appetizers and sweets, chapter members reviewed several aspects of chapter proceedings.  Most notably, we discussed our chapter's election procedures for third year medical students and discussed potential avenues to enhance resident involvement in chapter activies, ideally by establishing a position for resident on our chapter's Executive Board.  All in all, the meeting was determined to be a great success, ranging from the thorough discussion of chapter policies to the culinary expertise of both faculty and student members.

December 2nd, 2011: Holiday Party

Members and their significant others gathered in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Harry Clarke on the evening of the second to celebrate the coming holiday season.  Dr. and Mrs. Clarke provided a wonderful opportunity to gather over great food, and our members extended their holiday cheer beyond the meeting by submitting donations for the local non-profit organization Charleston Therapuetic Recreation. 

November 8th, 2011: Scotch Tasting

This year's Scotch Tasting was held in the Mt. Pleasant home of Dr. and Mrs. Christopher Robinson of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Dr. Stephen Schabel, our former chapter Councilor, assumed the traditional role of Scotch tour guide.  Members were provided with the opportunity to taste a variety of different scotches.  The warmth of good company and delicious scotch were welcomed by all as winter weather had already crept upon us.

November, 2011: Dr. Schabel installed as President of the Charleston County Medical Society

Dr. Schabel added the Presidency of the Charleston County Medical Society to a long list of honors that recognize his commitment to the profession and public service. He is the second AOA Councillor ro be elected to this position, Dr. Biemman Othersen having served as President from 1981 to 1983.

October 1st, 2011: New Member Picnic

Our newly elected junior and senior members were welcomed into the chapter at our annual New Member Picnic.  This year's event was held in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Schabel located on Edisto Island.  Our members and their spouses were treated to crisp autumn weather in addition to the corned elk, steamed blue crabs and barbeque provided by our hosts.  We could not have asked for a more scenic locale or ideal weather for this important first meeting of the year.

September 22-23: Dr. Virella co-chairs the AOA Councillors Meeting

The September 2011 AΩA Councilors meeting took place in Chicago on September 22 and 23, and was attended by a record number of 42 councilors. The meeting identified and discussed a number of issues of importance to chapter councilors, including criteria for membership selection, chapter activities, promotion of professionalism and leadership, and involvement of AOA residents, fellows, and young faculty members is the chapter's activities. Drs. Gabriel Virella, representing the Alpha Chapter of South Carolina,  and Richard Gunderman representing the Alpha Chapter of Indiana, co-chaired the meeting (see The Pharos, Sring 2012 issue). September 14th, 2011: New Member Election

The new member election meeting was held at Dr. Jennifer Young's home. Dr. Young was a former president of our AOA Chapter and has graciously offered her home for several AOA events after her return to Charleston.
