M. Juliana (Julie) McElrath, MD, PhD obtained her dual degree at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1980.  She did her Internal Medicine residency at MUSC and a Clinical Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Columbia-Presbyterian, NYC.  In 1985, she became a post-doctoral fellow in Cellular Physiology and Immunology at the Rockefeller University, NYC. She was promoted to Assistant Professor at the Rockefeller University in 1988, and in 1990, she moved to the University of Washington, Seattle, where she became an Associate Professor in 1996 and a Full Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases in 2001.  In the same year, she became a member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.  Since 1991, she has been Director of the AIDS Vaccine Evaluation Unit at the University of Washington, Seattle.  She is associate Editor of the Journal of Infectious Diseases, a member of the NIH Vaccine Resource Development Group since 1999, and Chair of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network Laboratory Sciences Committee since 2000. She has published 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals, the majority on HIV/AIDS.  The Alpha Branch of AOA in S.C. elected Dr. McElrath as an alumna in 2002.
