Why should I participate in research studies?

Treatment Studies:

  • Most of the information we have about the treatment of substance abuse is from studies in adults with substance use disorders.  Little is known about what helps adolescents with substance abuse. Your participation in treatment studies can contribute to the body of knowledge information about about how best to treat adolescents with substance use disorders.
  • In most treatment studies, the care provided to participants is more frequent and more intense compared to that provided in routine treatment programs.  There is a higher level of safety monitoring, including lab testing before and during participation.
  • Your participation in research contributes to science.

Non-Treatment Studies:

  • Your participation may help improve our understanding of substance abuse in adolescents and adults.
  • Your participation may ultimately help us improve treatment for substance use disorders.
