Epic is MUSC’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) system that captures real-time data from Inpatient and Ambulatory patients. The Ambulatory EHR went live at MUSC in May 2012. The Inpatient EHR was introduced at MUSC in July 2014. Epic supports cohort discovery for research via:
- SliceDicer for self-service de-identified query access
- Workbench Reporting
- Crystal Reports
Workbench and Crystal Reports require BMIC Honest Broker services which can be scheduled in SPARCRequest (select Research Data Request).
MUSC Data Warehouse
MUSC and MUHA have established an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) to support their needs in clinical, organizational, and research initiatives. The EDW includes all historical medical records, data from Epic, as well as surrounding systems used at MUSC.
The Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW) is the clinical component of the EDW. The CDW is used to support longitudinal research. BMIC Honest Brokers query CDW for data requests extracting demographics, visit information, ICD-coded diagnoses, ICD-coded procedures, medications, and laboratory test results collected from 1993 to present.
The Clinical Data Warehouse is a collaboration between the Offices of the Associate Provost for Research, Chief Information Officer, and SCTR.

Research Data Warehouse (RDW)
The Research Data Warehouse (RDW) is supported and maintained by the Biomedical Informatics Center to support longitudinal research, MUSC i2b2, MUSC PCORI, and feeds (Health Sciences South Carolina, Pediatric Trial Network, NorthShore Neurology Practice Based Research Network, etc.). RDW includes a wider breadth of data as compared to MUSC EDW or HSSC CDW but for a shorter date range. RDW includes demographics, visit information, ICD diagnoses, ICD and CPT procedures, medications orders/administrations/dispensing, laboratory orders and results, ICD Problems lists, allergies, immunizations, histories (medical, surgical, social, smoking, pertinent negative medical, pertinent negative surgical), notes, research permissions, vitals and other observations (flow sheet data) sourced from EPIC. Additionally, RDW contains data from the Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) registry allowing linking HCC data with clinical data source from EPIC. The RDW data dictionary contains an up to date list of all elements available in RDW with an indicator if the item is exposed in i2b2. RDW is updated daily. Users can see the current date range along with patient counts for the domains exposed when “Choosing a Project” using the local MUSC i2b2. MUSC Disease Registries
In addition to the CDW, MUSC maintains detailed disease registries for stroke, lupus, alpha-1 antitrypsin, and other rheumatic diseases. These registries expand the longitudinal information available for researching specific cohorts. HSSC Data Warehouse
MUSC is an active member in Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC), the first statewide biomedical research collaborative in the United States. HSSC’s Clinical Data Warehouse supports cohort identification and analysis through a collection of 3.2 million patients from across the state. MUSC participates in three regional SHRINE networks: Carolinas Collaborative, PCORI MidSouth, and Southeastern SHRINE. The Shared Health Research Information Network (SHRINE) builds on existing i2b2 framework to enhance population-based research by combining large groups of well-characterized patients. These regional networks support de-identified aggregate queries combining MUSC’s patients with regional healthcare systems such as Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt.

MUSC participates in a national SHRINE networks called ACT. The Accrual for Clinical Trials Network supports de-identified aggregate queries from 21 participating CTSA’s: Columbia University, Emory, Harvard, University of California Davis, University of California Irvine, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, University of California San Francisco, University of Colorado, University of Florida, University of Minnesota, University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas Southwestern, Children’s National Medical Center, Duke University, Indiana University, Medical University of South Carolina, Northwestern University, Oregon Health and Science University, Stanford University, and University of Cincinnati.
