The Carroll A. Campbell Jr. Neuropathology Laboratory, CCNL

The Neuropathology Laboratory was founded in 2009 at MUSC in order to enhance postmortem diagnostics and research on Healthy Aging and neurological disorders, including Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Autism, Down’s syndrome, Depression, Epilepsy, Hearing loss, Huntington’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Pick’s disease,  and stroke. A brain bank is a centralized collection center for brain tissue, obtained after death for the purpose of research and accurate diagnosis of brain-related diseases.

Our Services

1. Coordinate the brain donation registration program in South Carolina

2. Educate the public and health professionals regarding brain donation programs and associated research

3. Provide information and referral support for family  members

4. Participate in research to better understand the mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders

5. Foster close collaboration with clinicians to rapidly advance discoveries in the field of neurological disorders

6. Participate in research networks and share well characterized brain tissue and associated structures that meet national and international procurement standards

Our primary goal is to prevent devastating neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease and improve treatment through training and research.
