Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Neuropathology Laboratory (Brain Bank)

For Donor's Family

My family member is a donor.  What is my role in the process?

Your family member, or loved one, has made an important decision to donate their brain to the Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Neuropathology Laboratory after death.  Their donation will be a valuable resource for scientists who are striving to discover treatment and prevention strategies to combat neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.  After their death, you will be required to sign a consent form which authorizes the donation.

Please keep a copy of this document in a safe place to use as a guide when the time comes.  If you make funeral arrangements in advance, please notify the funeral home of your loved one’s decision. It is also helpful to notify the managing nurse or physician, as they may help facilitate the process.

At the time of death or impending death please contact a brain donation coordinator by calling 843-494-1578 or 843-792-7867.

Your call will be promptly returned and the staff will guide you through the process. Even if your loved one has already registered as a donor with the Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Neuropathology Laboratory, consent must be given by the legal next-of-kin after the person has passed in order for the donation to proceed. At the time of death, you will also have to fill out one Medical release form for each treating physician. Click on the two links below to download each of these forms. A Medical Release Form is needed for us to obtain important information from your loved one’s doctor, to make a a valid diagnosis based on clinical findings.

Consent can be given in person, by fax, or by telephone. It is important that the Neuropathology Laboratory be contacted as soon as possible after passing in order to preserve the quality of the tissue. We understand this is a sensitive issue and will be happy to answer any questions you may have, now and throughout this process. Please contact the coordinator at Laura Columbo at 843-494-1578 or columbol@musc.edu with any questions.  You may also contact Drs. Lotta Granholm (Co-Director, granholm@musc.edu) or Kumar Sambamurti (Co-Director, sambak@musc.edu) directly for any further questions.
