Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Neuropathology Laboratory (Brain Bank)

For Donor's Family

My family member is a donor.  What is my role in the process?

Your family member, or loved one, has made an important decision to donate their brain to the Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Neuropathology Laboratory after death.  Their donation will be a valuable resource for scientists who are striving to discover treatment and prevention strategies to combat neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.  After their death, you will be required to sign a consent form which authorizes the donation.

Please keep a copy of this document in a safe place to use as a guide when the time comes.  If you make funeral arrangements in advance, please notify the funeral home of your loved one’s decision. It is also helpful to notify the managing nurse or physician, as they may help facilitate the process.

At the time of death or impending death please contact a brain donation coordinator by calling 843-494-1578 or 843-792-9447

Your call will be promptly returned and the Neuropathology staff will guide you through the process. Even if your loved one has already registered as a donor with the Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Neuropathology Laboratory, consent must be given by the legal next-of-kin in order for the donation to proceed.

Consent can be given in person, by fax, or by telephone. It is important that the Neuropathology Laboratory be contacted as soon as possible after passing in order to preserve the quality of the tissue. We understand this is a sensitive issue and will be happy to answer any questions you may have, now and throughout this process. Please contact Laura Columbo at 843-494-1578 or columbol@musc.edu with any questions.
