| Financial Information Tuition and Fees For details concerning specific and required fees, the Schedule of Academic Charges is publish annually and is available in June. The schedule is posted on the University website. It is also available from the Office of Enrollment Management. Information on additional costs for books, supplies, uniforms, and special instruments may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid. Students are responsible for the living and transportation costs of participating in the programs which may include clinical affiliations outside the Charleston area. Liability insurance and other professional expenses are required in some programs. For more information about additional expenses, contact the appropriate program. Refund Policy for College of Health Professions Please see the University refund policy in the Academic Policies and Information section of this Bulletin. Exceptions Exceptions to this refund policy of catastrophic illness or accident may be solicited through the dean’s office. Financial Aid For general financial aid information, see the General Information section of this Btulletin. For more information about graduate student assistance, contact the educational program directly. Information on financial assistance offered by state and national health professional organizations is available from the individual programs. Listed below are scholarships which are available only for College of Health Professions students. These are for fulltime in-state students only and are based on academic achievement, financial need, and non-cognitive factors such as, but not limited to, community services, college involvement, and volunteerism. This information will be taken from your application. Financial need is established through applying for assistance with the Office of Financial Aid. Call (843) 792-2536 to receive the necessary forms. There are a limited number of College of Health Professions scholarships available. You can pursue other opportunities through the Office of Financial Aid. Scholarships Applying for Scholarships Scholarships are awarded in the Summer, Spring, and Fall terms based on the term specified. To be considered for available scholarships, please submit a scholarship statement which notes your community service, related work experiences, and other extracurricular activities by the deadline for the term. Please read each scholarship criteria carefully and include appropriate information where applicable. In addition, some of the scholarships require a separate essay, so please read the criteria carefully.

The following scholarships may be available, depending on funding, through the College of Health Professions. After each scholarship there is a term in parentheses this indicates which term the scholarship would be applied to the recipient's student account. American Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants Scholarship The AFPPA offers 8 scholarships annually. Three $1500 awards are for senior or masters students. Three $1000 awards are for junior students. Two $500 awards are made to previous graduated students returning to school for a master's degree. An essay describing your committment to primary care or family practice medicine is required. For more information, please contact: www.afppa.org. The application deadline is September 1st. The Anne Pappas Scholarship Established by Dr. Alexandros A. Pappas, clinical assistant professor of laboratory medicine, in memory of his wife, this award is designated for a student entering a laboratory science curriculum. Each applicant must write a personal essay and provide references. The scholarship will be awarded based on financial need and academic excellence; preference is given for South Carolina residency. (Fall) The Benjamin F. Lawson Scholarship This scholarship fund was established in honor of the former Dean of the College of Health Professions, largely through donations from alumni, friends, and faculty of the University. The award is given yearly to an entering student who has been selected on the basis of academic performance and financial need. (Fall) Catherine Michele Poulnot Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was formed to honor the memory of an outstanding physical therapy student who dedicated her time to helping individuals with disabilities. Michele Poulnot was a biomedical engineer who worked in the physical therapy department at the Medical University Hospital designing and developing devices to improve the mobility of children and adults with disabilities. She then decided to pursue an additional degree in physical therapy. Michele loved working with children and she volunteered a significant amount of her time to agencies such as the Association for Wheelchair Equality (AWE).
This Memorial Scholarship will consist of two scholarships awarded annually to physical therapy students who have demonstrated the highest level of active interest in working with persons who are disabled. The scholarships are awarded based on a demonstrated commitment to volunteer and/or work in programs assisting individuals with disabilities to improve the quality of their lives. Preference will be given to individuals who have specifically worked with the pediatric population. The awards are also based on a demonstrated financial need as indicated by student loan amounts. The David C. Munday Memorial Scholarship Fund Established by Jessica E. Munday, a 1998 master in health administration graduate, and Ryan Thomas Munday-Herald in memory of their father, David Charles Munday. In recognition of their father’s commitment to higher education and giving back, this scholarship is intended to help an incoming residential master in health administration student in pursuit of an education in health professions. The award is based on financial need, academic excellence, leadership, community service, and an essay illustrating why the applicant feels they should receive the scholarship and why they decided to pursue a career in healthcare. (Spring)
The Edith H. Peng Scholarship This scholarship was created by Dr. Vincent Peng in honor of his late wife, Edith, and to thank the Medical University of South Carolina for the education in the medical sciences both he and his wife received many years ago. Mrs. Edith Peng was a 1968 graduate of the Cytotechnology program and Dr. Vincent Peng was a 1966 graduate of the College of Pharmacy and a 1970 graduate of the College of Medicine. (Fall)
The Elizabeth P. Gouge Memorial Physician Assistant Scholarship Established by the South Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (SCAPA) in memory of their long time treasurer and alumna of the MUSC Physician Assistant program. This scholarship is given yearly to an entering Physician Assistant student. It is awarded based on academic excellence and financial need. (Fall)
The Eric Michael Hardy Memorial Scholarship Established by the family to honor the memory of their son and brother, this scholarship recognizes a Rehabilitation Sciences student with an interest in clinical work and who through their profession will touch and enhance the quality of life for many lives. It is awarded based on financial need, academic excellence and community service. (Summer)
The HCA/DeMarco Endowed Scholarship The purpose of this scholarship is to provide funds for a student in the Residential Masters of Health Administration program. Qualifications for the awarding of the scholarship will be based on merit, demonstration of leadership skills, and financial need determined by a selection committee. (Spring) The James Palmer Dearing Memorial Scholarship This scholarship honoring Professor James P. Dearing was established by contributions from his family, fellow faculty, and former students. The award is given to an outstanding cardiovascular perfusion senior student who demonstrates academic achievement, intellectual potential and professionalism as evaluated by the faculty. (Fall)
The Kathleen and Brock Rowley Scholarships The Rowley Award for Education in Rehabilitation Sciences This is awarded to a CSD, OT, and PT First-Year Student. The students will be selected based on academic achievement and financial need. Also, the finalists must submit an essay on: "The Art and Science of Being an Excellent Health Professional." The Rowley Award for Academic Enhancement in the Rehabilitation Sciences This award is for a Second-or Third-Year Student. Each year, seed money will be available to an upcoming second and third year student to provide support for professional activities in the following types of areas: - Presentations at professional meetings
- Research projects
- Professional enhancement in continuing education
- Community outreach and service programs
The Rowley Award for Clinical/Research Excellence in Rehabilitation Sciences This scholarship will be awarded to a third-year student in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences. Each program may have different criteria for the award; however, the award is designed to recognize demonstrated excellence and to enhance educational experiences in the clinical and research arenas. (Fall) The Kenneth and Cozie Thomas Memorial Scholarship Established by Dr. Jack Thomas, Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Sciences, in memory of his parents, this scholarship is given yearly to a second-year Rehabilitation Sciences student. The recipient will have demonstrated exceptional academic and professional performance, and will be judged by the faculty to have potential for becoming an outstanding clinician. (Summer) The Mary Anne Cone Scholarship The Mary Anne Cone Scholarship was created by the Anesthesia for Nurses class of 1993 in honor of Mary Anne Cone, member of the first AFN graduating class and former program director of the Anesthesia for Nurses program. It is awarded based on financial need and merit. Merit is determined by an essay written by the student. (Fall). The Public Advisory Board Scholarship The Public Advisory Board, a group made up of community leaders, business people, and educators that advises the College of Health Professions, awards a scholarship each year for a continuing student in the College of Health Professions. Qualifications for awarding this scholarship are based on academic achievement and outstanding potential to become a leader in their profession. An essay is required. The topic for the essay is: "The Art and Science of Being an Excellent Health Professional." (Spring) The Robert Hart Blackwell Memorial Scholarship Established by Jerry and Mindy Blackwell, a faculty member of the college, in honor of their son who received excellent care from MUSC’s allied health professionals. In recognition of the devotion and skill these professionals bring to their patients, this scholarship is intended to encourage non-traditional students (students who are returning to school after being out of school for a period of time) as they pursue their education in the health professions. (Fall) The Reamer Lorenzo Cockfield Scholarship This scholarship was set up for a first-year Physician Assistant Student to honor Dr. Reamer Cockfield’s accomplishments as a teacher, principal, and superintendent for 36 years and to recognize his significant contributions to his community. Students must be an in-state resident and be a first-year Physician Assistant Student attending the Physician Assistant program at MUSC. Each applicant must write a one-page essay describing their current or past community service projects and the significance of such. (Summer) Relax the Back/Lowery Family Scholarship Established by Todd and Pam Lowery, co-owners of the Mt. Pleasant Relax the Back store. In recognition of their commitment to higher education and giving back, the scholarship is intended to help a third year Doctorate of Physical Therapy student in pursuit of an education in the health professions.
The scholarship will be awarded to a third-year Doctorate of Physical Therapy Student with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and will be based on financial need. Special consideration will be given to students who as children were placed in foster care and/or adopted. (Summer)
Student Government Association Scholarship The CHP SGA Scholarship Award was developed as a means to actively support the college and to serve as a tool to promote diverse involvement in student life within the College of Health Professions. The CHP SGA scholarship will be a one-time annual award presented to a deserving student enrolled in the College of Health Professions.
Candidates will submit applications to the College of Health Professions Scholarship Committee through the Student Services Center. Candidates can either be full-time or part-time students. The award will be based on the following criteria: dedication to and participation with CHP SGA; academic performance based on a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25; dedicated leadership within the college; letter of intent; extracurricular activity; and service to the college, university, and community. Sushma Rao Memorial Scholarship Established by family and friends as a memorial to Sushma Rao, Physician Assistant, for deserving students in need of financial support pursing a degree in the MUSC Physician Assistant Program. One Award will be awarded to a first-year PA program candidate who fulfills the following criteria: - Overall GPA for the most recent or undergraduate class should be 3.0 or higher
- Have financial need
- Have significant experience in volunteer community service
- Preference will be given to South Carolina or Georgia resident. (Fall)
Will Hagood Scholarship This scholarship will be awarded to one clinical year physician assistant student at the start of their clinical year. This award will be given to a non-traditional student who has greater than 3 years of post-graduate life and/or clinical experience, who exemplifies exceptional commitment to healthcare, demonstrates financial need as delineated by the MUSC Financial Aid Office, demonstrates ideals in keeping with the spirit of Will Hagood, and has a lust for living. First of all, Will Hagood was a non-traditional student who came to the PA program at MUSC after many other adventures and accomplishments. Will had a "lust for living" that made him unique, and a joy to be around. He wanted "to do it all" and became a master of many things - skiing, rock climbing, wind-surfing, kayaking, to name just a few. He also had a true compassion for all people, especially the young and the old, those out of the "main stream". He was working in the field of pediatrics at the time of his death and said he had found "the place he was needed". Applicants interested in applying for the Will Hagood Scholarship should address the following in their essays: What gives you a "lust for living"? Where do you see yourself "being needed" when you complete this program? What makes you a non-traditional student?
The essays will be reviewed by those faculty members in the PA program who had the good fortune to know and work with Will while he was a student here and after as a practicing PA.
Alumni Association Scholarship A scholarship will be awarded to a continuing student of the College of Health Professions based on criteria such as academic credentials, leadership service, and community involvement. Applicants must be full-time students in good standing in the College of Health Professions at MUSC and must have demonstrated service as an officer, member or volunteer of any organization recognized by MUSC or the surrounding Charleston community. Scholarship recipient is selected by the board of the alumni association each spring. Scholarships are presented during the hooding ceremony prior to graduation.
