Technical Standards
The Medical University of South Carolina details the minimum abilities needed by all students.  While admission decisions do not take disabilities into consideration, nor are applicants invited to disclose a disability, all persons interested in entering a health profession education program should be aware of minimum abilities required for success. Minimum abilities for physician assistant students can be obtained from the College of Health Professions, Associate Dean of Student Affairs.

Upon admission, a student who discloses a disability (with certification) is assured of reasonable accommodations. PA students seeking accommodation initiate their request in the Office of the Dean of the College of Health Professions.

International Students
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for admissions for international students whose native language is not English. A minimum score of 550 is preferred. The TOEFL score will be evaluated in conjunction with other academic credentials.  Acceptable communication skills including reading comprehension, oral communication, and writing are required.

Computers
Since computers have become an essential part of education and medical practice, students entering the Physician Assistant Program are issued computers through the College of Health Professions Student (CHP) Laptop Program. Under this program, laptop computers are loaned to students for personal use while enrolled in the college. The CHP laptops meet all recommended MUSC software and hardware standards. Maintenance and repair of these laptops are provided through the college.

Physician Assistant students are required to purchase a personal digital assistant (PDA) for use during their clinical clerkship experience. The PDA is both an educational and research tool used throughout the clinical experience. Students should make sure to purchase only one of the approved models with the correct platform to support the clinical year software. The Student Services Coordinator distributes this information to students prior to the clinical year.
