Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)
The Medical Scientist Training Program is partially supported by a National Institutes of Health training grant. The program is designed to facilitate the development of superior students into individuals who can provide the innovative leadership required by the medical sciences. The program provides the opportunity to obtain both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. Accordingly, the program seeks to integrate the best qualities of the medical and graduate programs to allow outstanding training in both clinical and research areas.

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) Steering Committee consists of members drawn from both basic and clinical sciences departments. The program director and committee are responsible for the operation of the program. The primary purpose of such an administrative structure is to guide the students in the program toward the highest quality of intellectual curiosity and the attendant accomplishment of academic excellence. Requirments are as follows:

Submit an AMCAS application (www.aamc.org)
Submit The Medical Scientist Training Program application (www.musc.edu/es/apply)
Write a letter directed to the MSTP Committee requesting admission to the combined program and describing how this program will fit into the applicant’s career goals.

The committee will consider the following criteria for admission to the program:
(1) Evidence of a serious and enthusiastic commitment to the program
(2) Minimum GPA of 3.5
(3) An overall 80th percentile on the MCAT
(4) Receipt of a baccalaureate degree prior to matriculation into the program
(5) Record of advanced courses in the physical and biological sciences
(6) Demonstrable evidence of a commitment to research
(7) Outstanding recommendations from faculty at the applicant’s undergraduate institution. Interviews and discussions with the members of the MSTP Committee and graduate program directors are conducted.

In general, specific programs of study are designed to meet the particular needs of individual students. With the approval of the MSTP Steering Committee, any member of the faculty of the College of Graduate Studies who can provide adequate resources for a student’s program is eligible to serve as the major professor to a student in the program. The MSTP Committee must approve the selection of both the research advisor and the advisory committee. The committee encourages students to enroll during the summer before the first year of medical school to begin research rotations or course work. Exceptions to this, however, will be permitted for maximum flexibility with respect to curriculum design. Stipend support, a Dean's Scholarship to offset the tuition and paid health insurance are provided for all years the student is enrolled in the program.
