Honors, Hooding and Awards
First and Second Honor graduates are recognized for their academic achievement during graduation and listed as such in the official MUSC Graduation Program. All graduates receive their academic hoods during the College of Pharmacy Awards Ceremony and Hooding Convocation held prior to graduation. Various awards, determined by faculty vote, are presented during this ceremony.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS
*Scholarships fully endowed at the $50,000 level or higher as required by the Medical University of South Carolina Foundation

Michael Araneo Endowed Scholarship – Established in 1992 to provide scholarships for academically qualified pharmacy students in financial need. The scholarship awards may be applied to tuition, books, lab fees, supplies and other expenses deemed appropriate by the Scholarship Committee of the College of Pharmacy. The scholarship is renewable provided the student remains academically qualified.

T. Edward Childress, III, & John P. O’Brien Jr., Endowed Scholarship – Established in 1995 by Class of 1968 distinguished alumni Childress and O’Brien to benefit pharmacy students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and a preference for long term care pharmacy.

Mr. Charles F. Cooper, Sr. Endowed Scholarship – Established in 1992 by Class of 1965 distinguished alumnus Cooper to provide scholarship(s) to rising P4 pharmacy students maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher with a preference for long term care pharmacy who are South Carolina residents from Horry or Georgetown counties.

Dr. Alvin F. Dodds Endowed Scholarship – Dr. Dodds graduated from the College of Pharmacy in 1949 and served on the faculty for almost 35 years. Beloved by students, this scholarship was created in his honor at the time of his retirement in 1981. Scholarship(s) are awarded to rising P3 or P4 pharmacy students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and in financial need.

Dr. William H. Golod Endowed Scholarship – Dean and Professor Emeritus, Dr. Golod was appointed Dean of the College of Pharmacy in 1965. Being age 31 at the time, he was the youngest Dean in the United States. At his retirement from the deanship in December 1993, he was considered to have the longest tenure of any pharmacy dean in the country. Scholarship(s) awarded annually to pharmacy student(s) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and in financial need.

Dr. and Mrs. Arnold W. Karig Endowed Scholarship – Dr. Karig joined the College of Pharmacy in 1970 and currently serves as MUSC Campus Dean. Established in 2002 through royalties from Dr. Karig’s work in maintaining a Drug Interaction Database for NDC health, formerly National Data Corporation, this scholarship should be awarded to a graduate of a South Carolina High School, who is a P3 Student with a GPA of 3.3 or higher, and has an interest in nonprescription drug therapy and intent to practice community pharmacy.

Vivian F. Platt, Sr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship – Vivian F. Platt Jr. established this scholarship in 1974 with a gift of $10,000 in honor of his father Vivian F. Platt, Sr. Vivian F. Platt, Sr. was a graduate of the MUSC College of Pharmacy and worked as a pharmacist in Myrtle Beach. The initial contribution has grown through investments at the Health Sciences Foundation to one of our largest scholarships. Awards are made to pharmacy students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference is given to South Carolina residents from Horry or Marion counties.

Harry L. Rickenbacker, DDS, Endowed Scholarship Fund – Established in 2001 by Class of 1969 distinguished alumnus Rickenbacker to benefit pharmacy students based on financial need. Preference is given to North Carolina residents..

Dick and Emily Schwerin Endowed Scholarship – Established in 2001 by Class of 1967 alumnus Dick Schwerin and his wife to benefit pharmacy students for exceptional academic merit. Scholarship(s) awarded annually.

JM Smith Foundation Endowed Scholarship – Established in 1995 to benefit pharmacy students who have an entrepreneurial interest in pursuing ownership of a pharmacy and/or have a documented legacy of pharmacy entrepreneurship in their immediate family (i.e., parents, grandparents, siblings, uncles, aunts).

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
Scholarship funds are established, but not fully endowed at the $50,000 level.

Deborah Gordin-Markel Memorial Scholarship Fund – Established in memory of Debby Gordin-Markel, a 1981 PharmD graduate of the MUSC College of Pharmacy. The scholarship is awarded to a P3 student who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need, and best exemplifies those qualities of professionalism, dedication and compassion, which were deep commitments of Debby’s to her profession.

F. Joseph Hodge Endowed Scholarship Fund – Established in honor of distinguished alumnus and retired assistant professor Joe Hodge, who made significant contributions to the alumni effort at the College of Pharmacy. Scholarship(s) awarded annually.

Dr. Julian E. McGill Endowed Scholarship Fund – Established in honor of former 27-year faculty member Dr. McGill, who was the recipient of the first ‘Golden Mortar and Pestle Award’ from the students. The Award was given to the professor who had contributed the greatest to the students’ achievement of their goals in pharmacy education. Scholarship(s) awarded annually.

ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP DONORS
Annual gifts made to the College of Pharmacy Scholarship & Awards Fund for the restricted purpose of providing a scholarship.

Charleston County Pharmacy Auxiliary Scholarship – Established in the 1930’s by the wives of active and retired pharmacists, the scholarship is awarded to a P3 or P4 female student who is a South Carolina resident with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Scholarship is renewable if the recipient maintains a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The recipient is asked to attend a luncheon meeting with the remaining active members of this auxiliary during the month of October.

MUSC College of Pharmacy Class of 2006 Scholarship – The Class of 2006 elected to designate its senior class campaign gifts to establish the scholarship fund. Scholarships are awarded to P3 or P4 students in good academic standing and a minimum of 10 (ten) hours of community service for each previous academic year logged with the MUSC Gives Back Program.

CVS/Pharmacy Scholarships (CVS Charitable Trust, Inc.) – Scholarship(s) awarded to the winner of the Patient Counseling Competition and other students in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or higher) who have a preference for community pharmacy practice. The CVS Charitable Trust, Inc., is a private foundation managed by CVS Corporation. In operation since 1963 under the name ‘Consumer Value Store’ and through mergers and acquisitions, there are currently over 4,000 CVS/pharmacy stores operating in 32 states.

Flanders, Inc. Scholarship – MUSC alumni Kevin Floyd and Gary Anderson completed requirements to trademark a popular compounded product for diaper rash. The success of this popular diaper rash product, Flander’s Buttocks Ointment, supports this scholarship awarded to a pharmacy student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in financial need.

Nathalee Hare Memorial Scholarship (sustained through the MUSC College of Pharmacy Class of 2007 and the Student National Pharmacy Association) – Established in 2005 in memory of P2 Nathalee Hare, the scholarship is awarded to student from Orangeburg, SC and in good academic standing.

Joe Hodge Consultant Pharmacist Scholarship (through support from the South Carolina Chapter of The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists [ASCP]) – This scholarship is presented in honor of Joe Hodge, pharmacy Class of 1956 alumnus and retired College of Pharmacy faculty member. The scholarship is awarded to a P3 or P4 student interested in the practice of senior care pharmacy as consultant pharmacists.

Robert C. Hubbard, III & Claudia B. Hubbard Tiger Scholarships – Established in 2006 by Rob Hubbard, a 1969 graduate of the MUSC College of Pharmacy. The scholarship is awarded to a student who completed their pre-pharmacy requirements at Clemson University and has financial need.

Lowcountry Pharmacy Association Scholarship – Supported by the local pharmacy association, scholarships are awarded to P3 or P4 students who are residents of Charleston, Dorchester or Berkeley counties, members of ASP maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher and in financial need.

Mutual Wholesale Drug Company Scholarship – Scholarship(s) awarded to a pharmacy student with a career interest in community pharmacy and maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better. Formed as a cooperative and owned and managed by pharmacists, Mutual Wholesale Drug Company, also known as Mutual Drug, serves as a wholesale distributor for independent pharmacies in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Education Foundation Scholarship – Serving as the voice for chain pharmacies since 1933, NACDS membership includes chain community pharmacy organizations and suppliers of goods and services to these pharmacies in the US and abroad. The NACDS Education Foundation supports one scholarship to our College, available for a P2 or higher student with an interest in community retail pharmacy practice and in need.

Pharmacists Mutual Companies Scholarship – One scholarship awarded to a student who is SC resident with an interest in community pharmacy and in need. Academic achievement is considered. Founded by a drug store owner in 1909 after experiencing first-hand the difficulties druggists encountered in seeking insurance, this Iowa-based company provides a variety of insurance and financial planning and investments products to pharmacists in over 40 states including South Carolina.

Pharmacy Network Foundation Scholarships – Scholarships are awarded to pharmacy students with a career interest in retail pharmacy with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients must be a graduate of a South Carolina or North Carolina high school and demonstrate financial need. The scholarship is renewable, so long as the student remains in good academic standing. Pharmacy Network Foundation was formed in 2002 from the sale of Pharmacy Network National Corporation, a pharmacy benefits manager originally designed by and for independent pharmacists.

Bryan Bailey Pigg Memorial Scholarship (through The Community Foundation of Gaston County, Inc.) – As a memorial to his son, Class of 1969 alumnus Graham Reid (Buddy) Pigg supports scholarships for students through the above named foundation. The scholarship supports a P1 student in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and in financial need. Scholarship may be renewed on an annual basis if recipient continues in the College of Pharmacy and maintains a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Publix Super Markets Charities Scholarships – Established by the founder of Publix Super Markets, Mr. George Jenkins, and formerly known as the George W. Jenkins Foundation, this Foundation supports efforts to improve life in communities where Publix Super Markets are located. The Foundation supports annual scholarships for pharmacy students with a GPA of 2.8 or higher.

Sentry Scholarship – Established in 2005 by an anonymous alumnus, the scholarship is awarded at the discretion of the College of Pharmacy Awards, Honors and Scholarships Committee.

The Spartanburg Treatment Associates Addiction Awareness Scholarship – Established in 2005 by Mr. Brent Brady, a 1996 graduate of the MUSC College of Pharmacy and Founder and President of Spartanburg Treatment Associates, the scholarship is awarded to a pharmacy student in financial need.

Dr. Edward D. Sumner Scholarship – Scholarship(s) made available through funds from the Edward D. Sumner family. Dr. Sumner is a retired faculty member of the College of Pharmacy. Scholarship(s) are awarded to P2 or above students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and in financial need.

Walgreens Scholarship – Scholarship(s) awarded to pharmacy student(s) in good academic standing and with a career interest in community pharmacy practice. Founded in Chicago in 1901, successful entrepreneur Charles R. Walgreen, Sr., transformed pharmacies of the day not only by changing the look but also adding a level of service and personal attention that are equated with pharmacists today. Walgreens is aggressively opening pharmacies and operates in over 43 states.

Wal-Mart Scholarship – Scholarship(s) awarded to a P2, P3 or P4 student(s) with a minimum 3.0 GPA, strong leadership qualities and in financial need. The recipient must have current or prior experience in community pharmacy, and have a career desire for community pharmacy practice. Applicants receiving scholarship funds covering tuition and books from other sources do not qualify for this scholarship.
