CLARION Competition Emphasizes the Importance of Interprofessional Experiences

MUSC’s third annual CLARION Interprofessional Case Competition brought students from different programs together to dissect a complicated health care case to find root cause analysis and to provide recommendations in an interprofessional fashion. The objective of CLARION is to broaden the educational experience of health care students through interprofessional interaction as well as raise awareness of each profession to increase patient health outcomes.

Danielle Baskin, Melissa Thompson, and Janine Mitchell, Pharmacy students, coordinated the event this year, along with sponsors: Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society and the MUSC Student Government Association.

Seven teams submitted presentations to preliminary judges: Amy Blue, PhD, Edward Soltis, PhD, and Barbara Tilley, PhD. Three qualifying teams were under the spotlight at the finalists’ competition which took place on November 20, 2008. The finalist judges were: David Howell, MBA, Oscar Lovelace, MD, Rick Schnellmann, PhD, and James Sterrett, PharmD. Following the competition, a reception took place where the teams were presented with awards and Valerie West, EdD, was acknowledged by the students for her tremendous support of CLARION since its inception. This year’s competition will be her last before she retires.

All three teams did remarkably well and are listed below. The team that placed first will travel to the University of Minnesota in early April to compete at the National CLARION (Clinician Administrator Relationship Improvement Organization) Competition. The first place prize to be won is $5,000.
