Molecular Basis of Cardiovascular Disease

This inherently multidisciplinary research field is designed to provide our trainees with the knowledge base, technical abilities, problem solving skills and research experience necessary to find bold new approaches to aid understanding, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Areas of research interest in this program include regulation of cardiac growth, regulation of cardiovascular function and metabolism, regulation of muscle contraction and protein turnover, and signal transduction pathways and transcriptional regulation in healthy and diseased myocardium.

Numerous model systems are used by our faculty, including molecular and whole organ physiological approaches focused on transgenic and knock out animal models, surgical models of cardiovascular disease, as well as state-of-the-art analyses of isolated adult cardiac myocytes in vitro. These exciting studies are leading to the identification of novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
