Hospital plans to expand Tri-county primary care services

MUSC Physicians

MUSC Health is focused on improving access to our nationally ranked specialists through the strategic growth of our primary care services, which often are the first point of access into a hospital’s system.

This strategic growth supports several key initiatives which will help MUSC Health achieve its goal of being a top 25 academic medical center by 2015:

  • The new MUSC Health Plan offers enhanced preventive benefits and lower out-of-pocket expenses to MUHA employees who choose to see providers within our network, including their primary care physician.
  • The establishment of the MUSC Health Patient Centered Medical Home, where primary care providers coordinate all of the patient’s care, specifically as it relates to chronic disease management such as diabetes and heart disease.
  • The expansion of new primary care practices will improve patients’ access to care and also promote the MUSC brand.

Our strategic plan also encompasses the growth of our primary care network. This involves expanding our network of primary care providers, as the initial step to grow all of our outpatient services. MUSC leadership and each of the three MUSC Health primary care groups: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and MUSC Physicians-Primary Care (formally known as Carolina Family Care) have been working together to ensure successful growth in office locations, hours, access and number of providers.

MUSC Health has more than 80 primary care providers in 24 locations in the Tri-county area serving MUSC Health employees and their communities. The primary care physicians are board-certified and accepting new patients. Family Medicine (children and adults), Internal Medicine and Allergy services are included in the primary care network. Several locations take same-day appointments and walk-ins.

In addition, MUSC Physicians-Primary Care offers after hours clinics at Midtown Family Medicine, 5 to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday. Saturday clinics also are available at Flowertown Family Medicine from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. For a full list of the MUSC Physicians Primary Care locations and physicians or to make an appointment, visit http://www.muschealth.com/primarycare or 792-7000.

Aside from achieving top 25 status, an important reason leadership is focusing on the growth of primary care is to improve the health of employees and their families. As one of the largest employers in the state, it is critical for MUSC Health to ensure that our employees and their families easily gain access to care when they need it.

At the core, MUSC Health is about taking care of patients and their families, which includes MUSC employees.
