Meet Peter Kalivas, Ph.D.


How long at MUSC 
Almost 15 years

How are you changing what’s possible at MUSC:
•  Research: Together with my MUSC colleagues we built arguably the strongest addiction research program in the country that is generating new treatments for addiction through a unique collaboration between basic neuroscientists and clinicians.
•  Clinical: Together with my neurology and neurosurgery colleagues we built our current national ranking in stroke and epilepsy.
•  Education: I initiated the Neuroscience Ph.D. program that is now the largest departmental PhD track in the CoM.

What music is in your player right now: What would you like to hear? My player is loaded and always on scramble.

Dream job: Lead an addiction research program with limitless funding that would require me to visit out of the way places around the world.

Who in history would you most like to meet: I spent much of my life living in and exploring the Pacific Northwest. I would like to tag along with Lewis & Clark to experience the pre-small pox version of this part of the country.

Last book read: World War Z

Meal you love to cook: Lamb and swordfish surf and turf

The first thing you notice about a person: If they cannot meet my eyes.

What do you do on a rainy day: Either catch up on administrative work (with beer in hand), or do some fantasizing about what to do next in the lab or about my next vacation abroad (with fine Shiraz in hand).

Favorite restaurant: Fuji, neighborhood sushi place

Favorite place in the world: Southern Ethiopia

Best thing about living in Charleston: Two of my three kids live here, and I love my research colleagues.

What food is a must have in the freezer: Microwavable Brussels sprouts

Nickname in high school: I got the award for best hair as a senior.

How would you spend a million dollars: Buy an unpaid leave of absence for my entire family and go on a year long trip around the world

Favorite radio station: PBS

Your idea of a dream vacation: See what I would do with a million dollars

Greatest moment in your life: Surprising my wife on her 50th birthday with a party in a cave in Arkansas

Favorite quote: ‘Fortune favors the brave’
