MUSC board of trustees names new president Dr. David ColeTweet
Board members select new president from more than 50 applicants
MUSC board of trustees has offered the position of president of the university and its affiliated medical centers to David Cole, M.D. Board members completed the voting process during a special meeting called in accordance with its bylaws April 17.
Cole was selected from more than 50 applicants in the nearly year-long, nationwide search for new leadership. Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D. stepped down from the presidency last August to take a leadership position with the University of Texas Health System in Austin, and Mark Sothmann, Ph.D., MUSC provost, served the last 10 months as interim president during the search.
“We had three wonderful candidates, any one of whom would have done a wonderful job for MUSC,” said Thomas Stephenson, Esq. MUSC Board of Trustees chairman. “But, we had to pick one and I think the board was diligent and thoughtful in its selection. We all look forward to working with the new president.”
Cole currently serves MUSC as president of MUSC Physicians and as chairman of the Department of Surgery. Cole earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in Maryland and completed his residency training in general surgery at Emory University. After residency, Cole completed a surgical oncology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute Surgery Branch in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1994, Cole became an assistant professor in the MUSC College of Medicine and has been solid example of MUSC Excellence since that time.
Cole has served in a variety of faculty and leadership positions at MUSC since the mid-90’s, and earned tenure in 2001. His awards, board appointments, editorial positions, committee and society participation and research successes are far too many to list here. We’re confident his experience and strategic vision will help us achieve our goal of being one of the nation’s top 25 academic medical centers.
