Letter from MUSC BOT chairman Thomas StephensonTweet
April 17, 2014
Dear MUSC colleagues and friends:
I write to you today with wonderful news. The MUSC Board of Trustees has offered Dr. David Cole, a finalist in the MUSC presidential search process, the position of president.
As you know, Dr. Cole currently serves MUSC as president of MUSC Physicians and as chairman of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Cole earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College and completed his residency training in general surgery at Emory University. After residency, Dr. Cole completed a surgical oncology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute Surgery Branch in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1994, Dr. Cole became an assistant professor in the MUSC College of Medicine and has been a solid example of MUSC Excellence since that time.
Dr. Cole has served in a variety of faculty and leadership positions at MUSC since the mid-90’s. His national awards, board appointments, editorial positions, committee and society participation and research successes are far too many to list here. We’re confident his experience and strategic vision will help us achieve our goal of being one of the nation’s top 25 academic medical centers.
It’s also important that we recognize the tireless efforts on behalf of interim president Dr. Mark Sothmann as we searched for our university’s new leader. On behalf of the Board, I commend Dr. Sothmann’s steadfast work and leadership during this last year.
In closing, we hope you will join us in congratulating Dr. Cole regarding this honor and extend your support and encouragement as he transitions into his new role.
MUSC Board of Trustees Chairman
