We are pleased to invite you to our annual Faculty Convocation, to be held Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 4:30 pm. We will gather in the Drug Discovery Building Auditorium in order to discuss and consider this year's theme “Ethics in the Emerging Health Care System.” As always, we also celebrate the accomplishments of colleagues through awards for teaching, research and clinical excellence.
We are particularly excited to announce our keynote speaker, Robert M. Sade, M.D., Professor of Surgery and Director of the Institute of Human Values in Health Care.
Dr. Sade trained in surgery at various Harvard teaching hospitals, finishing at the Children’s Hospital, Boston in pediatric cardiac surgery where he served on the faculty for several years before moving to MUSC to create the Section of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery in 1975. He has written several hundred articles, book chapters, and books on cardiothoracic surgery, medical education, biomedical ethics, and health policy, and has edited numerous special symposium issues in peer-review journals on topics in bioethics, health policy, and the philosophy of medicine. Dr. Sade was a member of the Standards and Ethics Committee of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for 15 years and chaired the Committee from 2006 to 2012. He was a member of the American Medical Association’s Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs for seven years, retiring as chair of the Council in 2007. He has recently served on the Ethics Committee of the United Network for Organ Sharing. Dr. Sade currently chairs the Ethics Committee of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and serves as the Ethics Editor of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
After the ceremony, we’ll enjoy refreshments in the lobby.
