OM is an inflammation of the oral mucosa ranging from mild erythema to severe ulceration accompanied by pain and discomfort, leading to inability to tolerate food or fluids. OM affects the integrity of the oral tissues, setting the stage for infection by adventitious microorganisms. We hypothesize that an herbal mouthrinse may help to maintain oral health in patients undergoing radiotherapy to the head and neck. Likewise the oral microbial environment may play a beneficial role in oral cancers by producing enzymes necessary to activate dietary flavonoids for tumor cell suppression. Ongoing research includes demonstration of the relationship of oral microbes, enzymes, dietary flavonoids and maintenance of oral health. Vitamin D and Oral Health Research Vitamin D plays an important role in human health. Insufficient levels of vitamin D are associated with gingival inflammation and periodontal disease. Ongoing research includes investigation of serum vitamin D levels and oral health in populations of pregnant women, their infants and in diabetics.
