  • We're on a mission...

The Center for Health Disparities Research at the Medical University of South Carolina is focused on eliminating racial/ethnic, socioeconomic and rural/urban disparities in health.

  • We're striving for a healthier future...

through excellence in all phases of our work and continually improving our programs and practices based on new knowledge.

  • We focus on translating research...

to communities through development of health interventions that are effective and practical in the real world.

Who We Are

We are the MUSC Center for Health Disparities Research (CHDR), and the Charleston VA Health Equity and Rural Outreach Innovation Center (HEROIC).

  • Together, we have more than 50 investigators working on a wide variety of issues related to health disparities. These investigators include physicians, nurses and research scientists. They are based at either MUSC or the Charleston VA, or are affiliated with both institutions.
  •

  • CHDR investigators are supported by more than a dozen research staff members, including faculty, research nurse coordinators, biostatisticians and program assistants. We also engage medical and graduate students in short-term programs and encourage them to continue with health disparities research in their future careers.
  •

  • Dr. Leonard Egede serves as director of both CHDR and HEROIC. He leads their efforts with the guidance of the CHDR Advisory Board and the HEROIC Steering Committee.
  •

  • HEROIC is one of 19 VA Centers of Innovation (COIN).  We partner with other COIN centers across the country, as well as many other groups and organizations within the VA, MUSC and the community.
  •

  • CHDR and HEROIC studies have involved more than 1,000 participants. We could not achieve success without them.
