David R. Garr, MD

Complete Biographical Sketch 


David Garr, MD is the Associate Dean for Community Medicine, Professor of Family Medicine, and the Executive Director of the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC).  Dr. Garr completed medical school at Duke University and his family medicine residency at Highland Hospital in Rochester, New York.  He was the Medical Director of the Tooele Family Practice Group in the rural community of Tooele, Utah for several years followed by an appointment as the Director of Learning Resources at Mercy Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program in Denver, Colorado.  He has been on the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina since 1985. 

Dr. Garr has had an active role in medical student and family medicine resident education throughout his career.  His scholarly activities have focused on research and education in the areas of clinical prevention and population health.  He has served as the Chair of the DHHS Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion/Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) Cooperative Agreement Steering Committee and completed a two year term as the President of APTR in June 2006.  He is currently Co-Chair of the national Healthy People Curriculum Task Force, an interprofessional initiative working to increase the emphasis on clinical prevention and population health in health professions education programs.  As the Executive Director of the South Carolina AHEC, Dr. Garr is actively involved in addressing the health workforce needs in South Carolina, with a particular emphasis on the needs of rural and underserved communities.
