Since 2000, Ms. McKeehan has been working actively in outreach programs. These programs are designed to promote healthier citizens and healthier communities in South Carolina by responding to the need for health information and access to care. Under her direction, two Websites have been developed that are freely available to anyone. Hands on Health-SC
Ms. McKeehan's outreach interests include working with people in underserved communities, teaching them how to find resources, and giving them skills that will help them make better decisions about their health. She has traveled extensively to the rural areas of South Carolina to exhibit Hands on Health at community leader institutes, health fairs, and meetings. Her team presents workshops about evaluating health information on the Internet to community groups, high school students, social service and healthcare providers, and librarians.
Information is a resource that cannot be used up. Hands on Health-SC and Go Local-SC are resources that stay with a community when the academics leave.
The MUSC Library wants very much to partner with other health-focused community outreach projects to lessen the health burdens of South Carolinians.
