Bachelor of Health Sciences

The Bachelor in Health Sciences program is no longer accepting new students.

Program Information
The mission of the undergraduate health sciences program is to prepare health professionals to meet the operational challenges facing the health care industry. We offer a contemporary curriculum taught by seasoned health educators and administrators through a historical institution renowned for academic excellence in the area of health care education, leading to a bachelor of health science (BHS) degree.

Professionals working in the following fields may qualify for the program:

  • Dental hygienists and assistants
  • Emergency medical personnel
  • Histotechnologists
  • Medical assistants
  • Medical laboratory technicians
  • Health information managers
  • Nurses (associate degree or certificate)
  • Radiographers
  • Respiratory care practitioners
  • Physical therapy and occupational therapy assistants

Pre-Admission Requirements
To graduate from the BHS program, students must earn a total of 130 semester hours of credit (90 prerequisite semester hours, and 40 semester hours within the BHS curriculum) with an overall grade point average of 2.0.  Students are required to have completed at least 75 of the 90 required semester hours of prerequisite course work prior to entering the BHS program. Prerequisite courses include the 21 core hours and 59 remaining professional and general education hours (listed below). With program director approval, students may take up to 15 semester hours (or 5 courses) of prerequisite course work while enrolled in the BHS program.

All prerequisite coursework to be credited must be at the 101 or higher level with a grade of C or better. (Examples of Acceptable Prerequisites)

Credit may also be transferred by use of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) testing or other recognized suitable testing procedures.

Thirty (30) semester hours will be credited for previous health professional education coursework (the clinical components of most Associate's Degree programs). 

**Professional Science Courses
Professional Science courses are particular courses within each health profession discipline which comprise primarily science content.  Please contact the department to determine which courses qualify as professional sciences.  If no professional science courses apply to your field of study, natural science courses are required. 

Curriculum
Forty (40) semester hours of Medical University of South Carolina BHS coursework is required.  Courses are on-line with an introductory on-campus session at the beginning of each semester, and are designed to advance the administrative, educational, research, communication, and leadership skills of the health professional.

Upon admission into the program students will elect to attend the program either as a full time or part time student.

Full Time Plan of Study
Full time student enroll in 5 courses per semester, and will complete the program in 1 year.

Part Time Plan of Study
Part time student enroll in 3 courses per semester, and will complete the program in just under 2 years.

It is expected that for every three semester hour course, students will spend an average of five to eight hours per week engaged in reading, studying, communicating, and completing assignments and assessments.

Students who enroll in BHS program must have access (at home, at work, or through some other source) to a computer with a highspeed Internet service provider and Microsoft Office.

Students must also have a basic level of computer skills and knowledge of computer operation. In addition, students should have a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and Internet web-browsing.
