Student Government Association (SGA)
SGA’s mission is to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas among the six colleges and all students, to serve as liaison between MUSC students and administration, to take action to increase the quality of student services and academic programs, and to execute a variety of social, cultural and educational events to promote personal growth and enjoyment of life. College of Health Professions Student Government Association (CHP SGA)
CHP SGA meets on the first Wednesday of each month. During these meetings, the association discusses problems and suggestions voiced by the students of the college, has guest speakers, and plans activities throughout the year. Projects in the past have included hosting a Field Day for the College, collecting food for the Lowcountry Food Bank, participating in Habitat for Humanity, and hosting dinners for the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.

Student Health Professionals United in Recognizing Diversity (SHPURD)
Student Health Professionals United in Recognizing Diveristy (SHPURD) is a student organization whose members represent all disciplines and programs within the CHP. The organization welcomes all CHP students to join and participate in various volunteer and fundraising activities in efforts to educate the Charleston community on minority health awareness issues.

SHPURD meets every other Thursday during lunch (12:00-1:00 p.m.) for general business meetings and as needed for other events. The organization gives back via community service and fundraisers and gathers for social events as an avenue of well-deserved stress relief. A few of the organization’s community service events include the Minority Health Fair, Burke High School mentoring program, PINK House, Charleston Miracle League, and the HALOS Project.  To learn more, visit http://www.musc.edu/shpurd

The National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association is a pre-professional membership association for students interested in the study of communication sciences and disorders. Membership provides benefits that help students enhance their academic knowledge, participate in internships and network with others in the field of speech-language pathology and audiology. The purpose of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association - Charleston Chapter shall be to aid the students of the Medical University of South Carolina by providing support:

  • To encourage professional interest among college and university students in the study of human communication sciences and disorders.
  • To provide continuity to the dissemination of professional information.
  • To provide a vehicle for student representation in matters of professional concern.

Master of Health Administration (MHA) Student Association
The MHA Student Association consists of students enrolled in the Master of Health Administration program, College of Health Professions.  The MHA Student Association holds fundraisers for professional development (such as executive speakers), participates in social events and community service projects (such as Adopt-a-Highway), and is active in many professional healthcare executive and management organizations, including, but not limited to, the American College of Healthcare Executives, Healthcare Financial Management Association, and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.  Officers are nominated and elected in mid-November for terms beginning in January.

Student Occupational Therapy Association
The Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) promotes Occupational Therapy as a health profession, sponsors student activities, and facilitates communication between students and the college’s administration. SOTA is a  link for students to the South Carolina Occupational Therapy Association (SCOTA.) Additionally, SOTA is a link to the CHP Student Government Association and to the MUSC Student Government Association.

Physical Therapy Student Government Association
The Physical Therapy Student Government Association (PT SGA) is responsible for arranging an annual Physical Therapy Education open house, raising funds for student activities, arranging social functions, organizing intramural sports teams, distributing scholarship information, facilitating communication between faculty and students, and representing the students in discussions regarding student policies. Each PT class elects a president, vice president, secretary, sports’ representative, legislative liaison, APTA representative, SCAPTA  representative, and a treasurer.

Physician Assistant Student Society

The Physician Assistant (PA) Student Society is a student organization for aspiring students (Pre-PA), current PA students, and previous students (Alumni).  The Society is a direct link to the American Academy of Physicians Assistants (AAPA), which represents the Student Academy of the AAPA for the state of South Carolina.  They are actively involved in all student activities at MUSC, professional organizations, and the community at large.  All PA students at MUSC are members and have access to the privileges and resources provided through the academy.  To learn more about the Student Academy, Physician Assistants, or the MUSC PA program please visit the website or contact MUSC PA Class of 2010 Student Society President Zachary W.
