Philosphy Statement

Excellence in physical therapy education is rooted in an environment that fosters professionalism and where excellence in teaching, research, service/clinical practice are a complement to the mission of the University.  Our philosophy is represented by the educational principles and values that focus on:

  • professionalism
  • a scientific framework that will provide a foundation for clinical practice,
  • clinical practice that supports the preparation of entry-level practitioners, and
  • research.

Educational Principles and Values:

  1. The faculty recognizes the need to prepare graduates who are responsive to the demands and vision of a dynamic profession and to the health care environment.  The core values associated with professionalism in physical therapy are an important component of our program and faculty and students alike are expected to model these values in all practice environments.
  2. The basic sciences of anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, pathology, and neuroscience provide the framework for our division and the foundational knowledge for clinical practice. 
  3. The clinical practice portion of our curriculum includes both didactic and laboratory experiences related to physical therapy management of patient/client with impairments of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular/pulmonary, and/or integumentary systems.  These experiences are across the life span and are complemented with practical application in four clinical practicums.  The aggregate of these experiences supports the preparation of autonomous, compassionate, competent, and ethical entry-level physical therapy practitioners.
  4. The research component of the division prepares students to be able to evaluate and utilize scientific literature in order to provide competent patient/client management.  The curriculum includes introductory research principles and application complemented by clinical courses that emphasize evidence-based practice.  The faculty model lifelong learning and the importance of helping to advance physical therapy practice.  Faculty scholarship activities provide ongoing opportunities for students to learn the value of scholarship.
