Method of Evaluation CP 1
The student clinical performance is documented using the Clinical Performance Instrument of the American Physical Therapy Association. Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate behaviors consistently on “red flag “items. The Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI) documentation and comments of the student and clinical instructor will be the primary sources for assessment of student progress and proficiency in clinical practice. The CPI should be completed by the CI and a separate copy by the student at mid-term and again at the end of the practicum. These should be discussed and signed off online in order for the Director of Clinical Education (DCE) to review. Both the CIs and the student’s self-assessment CPIs should be fully completed online. The course is a pass/no pass course. Pass or no pass is based upon all written and verbal evaluative feedback provided to and collected by the program concerning student performance, including documentation from the CPI. Students are expected to demonstrate progress toward entry-level competence in all evaluative criteria identified in the CPI. The clinical instructor and the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education will assess student competence. The academic institution will determine appropriate action for students that are not at the appropriate level of competency at the end of the practicum.
Satisfactory performance on a clinical experience must include:
- Mid-term comments indicate satisfactory level of performance and no concerns were brought to the attention of the DCE during the weeks following the mid-term.
- No red flag items are identified as areas of concern at final evaluation.
- Student performance is expected at a minimum of advanced beginner performance.
- Written comments on CPI do not indicate significant areas of concern.
A pass grade will not be assigned by the DCE if any combination of the following occurs:
- Regression or no progress from mid-term to final evaluation in the performance criteria noted in multiple performance criteria.
- Student performance below advanced beginner performance.
- Concerns about any red flag behavior is brought to the attention of the DCE prior to the final evaluation and not resolved by the completion of the rotation.
- Comments and anecdotal information on the CPI are accompanied by a suggestion of extended time by the CI.
Any concerns will be discussed with the student. Any unsatisfactory student evaluation will result in an individualized educational plan for the student determined by the DCE and Program Director with input from the program faculty, in collaboration with the CI and CCCE.
The options available for unsatisfactory performance at the final assessment are determined for each individual student and situation, depending on circumstances. Options may include:
- Additional time in the clinic to allow a passing grade to be achieved.
- If a student does not achieve the minimum performance indicators with interventions determined by the CI, the CCCE and the DCE have been enacted, the student will receive a grade of No Pass and be required to schedule an appointment with the DCE to determine an appropriate plan of action. This may include return to campus to assist with successful completion of the individualized, structured remediation program to address specific problem areas.
- Following satisfactory completion of an individualized remediation program, the student will be required to re-enroll for PT 740: Clinical Practicum 1 and pay for another semester of tuition, thereby delaying graduation from the program. If the student is unsuccessful in repeating the Clinical Practicum, no further clinical experiences will be scheduled and dismissal from the program will follow.
