Formed in 2008 with the restructuring of the College of Health Professions (CHP), the Department of Health Sciences and Research (DHSR) is a unique blend of academic and research programs that are interdisciplinary in nature and promote the CHP vision to advance national distinction in key areas. Anchored by two key divisions, Healthcare Leadership and the Doctoral Program in Health and Rehabilitation Science, DHSR focuses on interdisciplinary education and research by integrating the immense strengths of the Medical University of South Carolina as one of the nation’s leading academic health centers with the College’s own enviable combination of high quality faculty and research laboratories/centers, and further enhanced with the engagement of national experts. Our students are Chief Executive Officers of major health care systems honing their leadership through the Doctor of Health Administration, directors of research enterprises advancing their knowledge through the Master of Research Administration, and scholars from a variety of fields conducting cutting edge research through the Ph.D. in Health and Rehabilitation Science. Our core faculty promote a research agenda integrating numerous disciplines including health policy, health psychology, health services, integrative physiology, communication sciences, health economics, and biomechanics, among others. Housed in the College’s Research Building, this diverse mix creates a vibrant community of scholars seeking answers to fundamental questions by integrating their own unique perspectives. The DHSR will continue to advance the College’s current national ranking as 8th of over 120 colleges of its type in the country in receiving research funding from the National Institutes of Health.
