Laptop Hardware and Software Standards – Bachelor of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion

The page was last updated on November 26, 2014.

The information on this page applies to students who will enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion Program at the College of Health Professions August 2015. These standards are updated yearly each fall.

OVERVIEW

All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion Program as of Fall 2015 are required to have a laptop computer AND an iPad tablet. Students will use laptops while on campus as part of course work to access online course materials, take web-based tests, take notes during class, and complete other academic work. Students will use a tablet computer during clinical rotations to access and use the Medatrax® application.

To ensure compatibility with the existing campus technology infrastructure, students must use a laptop that meets or exceeds these standards published below. CHP hardware and software standards are different from university standards. Tablet standards are also published below.

During orientation, new students will attend an information technology (IT) training session. You will be given instructions on how to access the campus wireless network, email, course materials, discounted software, and computer support. You will need your laptop for this training. If you are waiting on financial aid in order to purchase your laptop at the time of orientation, you will still need to attend the IT orientation.

For more information on these technology requirements, please contact Dr. Dusti Annan-Coultas, Director of Educational Technology, at 843-792-3968 or annandu@musc.edu.

SUGGESTED LAPTOP MODELS

Below are some laptop models suggested by the College for students who need to purchase a new computer.  Students assume all risk and responsibility when purchasing these models.

OBTAINING SOFTWARE AND DISCOUNTS

Students can obtain much of the software required by CHP for free or at reduced rates.

Microsoft® Office and Windows Operating Systems

Compusult (http://www.compusult.com/ or 1-800-992-6058) is a software retail company located two blocks from CHP. Students can purchase Microsoft® Office from Compusult for approximately $20/license. Windows operating system upgrades (requires an existing Windows operating system and appropriate hardware) are also available at a reduced rate. Students also can receive discounts on other software. Conditions will apply.  Students must show their MUSC badge when purchasing software at Compusult. These discounts will be discussed during Orientation.

Viewing and Creating PDF files

Most Apple computers already come with the capability to view and create PDF files, so students with Apple computers may not need additional software. For students with Windows computers, there are several ways to obtain PDF viewing and creation software. Adobe Acrobat® software is available at Compusult for purchase. This software allows the viewing, creation and full editing of PDF files. As well, students can download free applications that allow for the viewing and creation of PDF files. One application is CutePDF, available at http://www.cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf/writer.asp. Once installed, a PDF of a document is created by going to “Print” menu in the application. To install, visit the website for more details.

Web browsers

It is highly recommended that students have access to at least two different web browsers, one of which is Mozilla Firefox®. To download and install Mozilla Firefox® for free, go to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/ and look for the “Free Download” button for Mozilla Firefox®. Most Apple computers come with the Safari browser, and most Windows computers come with the Microsoft® Internet Explorer browser.

Virus Protection

Virus protection software is provided to MUSC students at no cost. This software is System Center EndPoint Protection® for Windows and Mac computers. New CHP students will be provided the opportunity to install this software during orientation.

SPSS®

Some CHP students may be required to obtain SPSS® statistical analysis software. SPSS® version 22 installation CDs can be checked out from the MUSC Education Center and Library at no charge. Students must show an MUSC badge. Currently, five Windows and Macintosh version CDs, each, are available for 24-hour checkout.

* A “tablet” is defined as a mobile computer larger than a Smartphone having the following characteristics: the use of a touch screen rather than an integrated keyboard as the primary input, web accessibility, and the capability to install and run software/applications. Examples included the iPad, Microsoft Surface, Samsung Galaxy, and Kindle Fire.
