Medical University of South Carolina Physician Assistant HRSA Grant

On March 23, 2010, Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA; PL 111-148) was signed into law. Among its many provisions, the PPACA reauthorized and amended the Training in Primary Care Medicine programs in Title VII, Section 747, of the Public Health Service Act. The Physician Assistant program at MUSC was recently the recipient of a 5 year HRSA grant that is a byproduct of the PPACA.

The 5 year HRSA grant aims to address shortages in primary care through these program initiatives:

Rural Interprofessional Student Experience (RISE)
Developing a didactic-to-clinical transitional component by placing students in rural settings for an inter professional experience that promotes understanding of health care systems.

Simulation Technology Curriculum
Integrating simulation technology into the didactic and clinical curriculum to enhance patient care.

Oral Health Initiative
Assimilating an oral health component into the PA curriculum to increase knowledge and skill for rural practice.

Academic Fellowship
Enriching our existing academic fellowship program to support future growth for upcoming faculty members, thereby fortifying the overall quality of graduate education in the field. Read more about the Academic Fellowship.
