Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM)

Cllinician examining child

Physician Assistants (PA) are providing care in many clinical situations wherein they will encounter acutely sick and or injured children. The knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide effective pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) has grown significantly since PEM was recognized as a specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Health Resources and Services Adminstration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMS-C) provided the funding through Grant H34MC04369 for the study and development of these educational modules.

The modules are divided into four topical areas of PEM:

  1.  Recognition of the acutely ill child
  2.  Infectious diseases
  3. Pharmacotherapeutics and toxicology
  4. Psychosocial issues.

Within the modules you will find some videos, clinical cases, and powerpoint presentations. The modules can be accessed at Educational Modules.
