Peripheral and Spinal Manipulation

The Physical Therapy Educational Program of the Medical University of South Carolina in conjunction with Laurel Concepts ® presents:

“An Evidence-Based, Case-Based Program for Orthopedic
Assessment and Manual Physical Therapy” 

Peripheral and Spinal Manipulation, Clinical Reasoning,
Treatment Classification, and Exercise Intervention

The course content and literature review used in this course series are based on peer-reviewed research conducted by physical therapists and content that is included in physical therapy texts and journals.  The content is not chiropractic, and is not presented as chiropractic technique, clinical reasoning / decision making processes, or philosophy.  The content of the course series is germane to evidence-based physical therapy practice, to include examination, evaluation, assessment, manual therapy including high velocity / low amplitude technique, exercise, patient education, and clinical decision making as relevant to physical therapy only. 

A series of courses offered by Richard Erhard, PT, DC, FFAAOMPT and Michael Timko, PT,
MS, FAAOMPT, in association with the Physical Therapy Educational Program of the
Medical University of South Carolina. All courses include instruction and practice for clinical skills.

Course benefits:

  • Allows participants to develop and expand their expertise in clinical decision making involving 
    the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems in the orthopaedic patient.
  • Assists in preparing qualified participants for orthopaedic and manual therapy specialization examinations.
  • Assists participants in refining skills in manual therapy, including manipulative (HVLA)
    techniques for the spine and the extremities.
  • Allows participants to refine diagnostic and treatment skills for neuromusculoskeletal disorders and receive expert mentorship in manual physical therapy of the spine and peripheral joints.

2008–2009 Course Schedule:

Course I:  August 22 – 24, 2008
Examination, Evaluation, and Treatment of the Patient with Lumbopelvic Dysfunction.

Course II:  December 5 -7, 2008
Examination, Evaluation, and Treatment of the Patient with Cervicothoracic Dysfunction.

Couse III:  February 27 – March 1, 2009
Advanced Clinical Practice for the Upper and Lower Quarter.

Spring, date TBA
*Review, written and practical examination for certification. (Certification requires completion of assignments additional to the courses)

  • Courses take place Friday afternoon/evening through Sunday (20 hours/2.0 CEU).
  • Friday sessions begin at 1:00 PM and go until 8:00 PM (6 hours and a 1 hour break)
  • Saturday sessions begin at 8:00 AM and go until 5:00 PM (8 hours class time)
  • Sunday sessions begin at 8:00 AM and end at 2:00 PM.  (6 hours class time)
  • *Participants should bring appropriate clothing to practice examination and treatment techniques each day, including the Friday sessions.
