Visiting Students

The Medical University of South Carolina will begin accepting applications for the 2016-2017 Academic Year beginning May 1, 2016.
MUSC offers a wide number of electives and externship experiences to medical students who are in the final year of their studies. Students must have successfully completed the basic core clerkships (Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Surgery, Psychiatry, and Family Medicine) in order to be eligible. All approvals are at the discretion of the department.
Approval notices are sent via email and will include additional information and requirements.

Students Applying From Accredited U.S. Medical Schools

Applications from students enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools can be submitted through the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) beginning May 1, 2016.

Underrepresented in Medicine Students

The Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship Program is a joint sponsorship by the MUSC College of Medicine Dean's Office and the Office of Diversity.  The goal of this program is to recruit talented 4th year URM students to MUSC who have met all requirements for visiting student electives listed in VSAS.  The program provides support for African-American, Native American, Hispanic and Pacific Islander students to participate in a variety of rotations throughout MUSC.  The following departments currently participate in this program: Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Internal Medicine, Neurosurgery, OBGYN, Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, Pychiatry, Radiology, Surgery and Urology.

Application details can be found on our visiting student website at: URM Visiting Student Programs

Students Applying from International Schools of Medicine

MUSC does not accept applications from international visiting medical students through the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS).   To apply, the student must first obtain a letter of support from an MUSC faculty member who knows them personally well enough and for long enough to testify to their academic, professional and personal integrity.  This letter must address the student’s attributes, professionalism and academic credentials.  Once the letter of support is received and approved by the Manager of Clinical Coordination, Credentialing and Compliance for Medical Students, an elective application will be sent to the student.

Students applying must be enrolled full-time at their home institution and in their final year of medical school.  Applications will only be accepted for rotations during October – April and rotations will only be permitted where there is clinical space available.  Pro-rated out of state tuition charges for each rotation will apply.  All applications are due at least 90 days before the start of the rotation.
