Message from the Dean
Congratulations to Dr. David Cole
Late yesterday, the MUSC Board of Trustees announced the selection of Dr. David Cole as the new MUSC President. We were fortunate to have three outstanding physician candidates under final consideration by the Board for this important role, and I am confident that Dave will do an absolutely wonderful job leading MUSC. I know Dave to be a person of great integrity, with a serious commitment to make MUSC an even stronger and more successful organization. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Cole on his selection as our new President.
Please also join me in thanking Dr. Mark Sothmann for his excellent service as Interim President over the past year. He has been a stabilizing force during this time of transition, and we are fortunate to have his continuing leadership as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost going forward.
Enterprise-Wide Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan Kick-Off Meeting
The enterprise-wide Diversity and Instruction Strategic Plan Kick-Off Meeting was held earlier this week. This initiative, which was announced to the MUSC community by Interim President Mark Sothmann last month (https://sp.musc.edu/com/discuss/general/default.aspx) includes representation from various units across the University, MUHA, and MUSC Physicians and is being co-chaired by Dr. Willette Burnham (representing the University) and Joan Herbert (representing MUHA). Five interprofessional working groups have been formed to develop plans in the following areas – Recruitment and Pipeline Development, Education and Training, Metrics and Outcomes, Engagement and Inclusion, and Communications/Community Outreach. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone participating on these working groups for the enthusiasm and energy they are bringing to this important initiative.
Congratulations to Dr. Danielle Scheurer
Dr. Danielle Scheurer, Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Chief Quality Officer for MUHA, was recently named to the Board of Directors of the Society of Hospital Medicine. We are fortunate to have Dr. Scheurer representing us on a national level through her work with this group. Please join me in congratulating Danielle on her selection for this leadership role.
COM Faculty Excellence Award Ceremony
All members of the College are invited to attend the COM Faculty Excellence Award Ceremony. It is scheduled for April 24, 12:00 p.m. in the Basic Science Building Auditorium, with a reception to follow in the Education Library Lobby. Come join us as we celebrate those faculty nominated by our students for their commitment and enthusiasm.
Annual Conflict of Interest Disclosures Due April 30
It is time for all employees to complete the mandatory annual Conflict of Interest Disclosure. A secure program allowing you to confidentially transmit information is used for the online disclosure and can be found at http://academicdepartments.musc.edu/coi. The deadline for completion of this form is April 30. Questions and comments regarding the COI disclosure should be sent to email@example.com.
3rd Annual Mentor Training Program
The MUSC Mentor Leadership Council and SCTR Institute are hosting the 3rd Annual Mentor Training Program - Practical Advice for Developing your Career & Getting Promoted- on April 25, from 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the Bioengineering Building Auditorium. Throughout this half-day program, essential and applicable components of effective mentoring will be addressed. All mentors and mentees are strongly encouraged to attend. Nominations being accepted for MUSC Foundation Faculty Awards
Nominations are being accepted for the 2014 MUSC Foundation Distinguished Faculty Service Award and the 2014 MUSC Foundation Outstanding Clinician Awards. Nominations are due April 25 and should be submitted to Interim President Mark Sothmann.
SCTR Scientific Retreat on Pain Research
SCTR will be hosting a Scientific Retreat on Pain Research on May 23 from 9:00-3:00 p.m., in the Bioengineering Building Auditorium. The keynote address on “The Chronic Pain Epidemic: Translational Challenges and Opportunities” will be given by Dr. Roger B. Fillingim, President of the American Pain Society. As a reminder, we have electronic discussion platforms focusing on various aspects of our mission. These forums are intended to serve several purposes. First, they are another way for my office to share important information with faculty, staff, and students. Second, they are meant to encourage discussion about issues within the college and to empower everyone within the college to voice their opinions.
