Thank you for making my second year at MUSC such an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I remain impressed by the talent, commitment, and dedication of our faculty, staff and students, and continue to be encouraged by the sense of shared mission and collegiality at the highest levels of the organization. While we continue to face many challenges as an institution, I am confident that together we will also continue to accomplish great things.
The past year has brought much change and success across each of our missions, including the following highlights-
- Preparation for our upcoming LCME reaccreditation review.
- Implementation of several new initiatives including the Match Assistance Program, the USMLE Board Prep program, the Student Online Research Portal for medical students, and the Residents Teaching Skills Toolbox.
- Recognition by US News and World Report again this year as one of the ten most popular medical schools.
- Completion of our clinical enterprise strategic plan and work towards implementation of the plan.
- Clinical outreach successes, in both the Charleston metropolitan area as well as new outreach efforts in Georgetown, Columbia, Florence, Greenville, Rock Hill, Hilton Head, and Myrtle Beach.
- Implementation of the Epic ambulatory electronic medical record.
- Numerous examples of national recognition for excellence, including – two programs nationally ranked and several others considered “high-performing” in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings and 37 physicians included in their list of Top Doctors; two programs now ranked in the top 50 in the U.S. News & World Report America’s Best Children's Hospitals rankings; MUSC Children’s Hospital received the Excellence in Patient Care award given by the Studer Group; and MUSC received a grade of “A” in patient safety from the Leapfrog Group.
- Continued implementation of our Research Strategic Plan, including the creation of a new Center for Genomic Medicine and a new Department of Public Health Sciences.
- Continued implementation of the faculty bridge funding program – support was provided for eleven established research programs within the college this year.
- Key appointments include - Chair for the Department of Ophthalmology; Chair for the Department of Medicine; Chair for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and Co-Chair for the Department of Neurosciences.
- Preparation for implementation of the new university-wide funds flow model.
- Implementation of departmental faculty mentoring plans.
I’ll elaborate on our accomplishments and plans for the future in my State of the College address, which will be held on Monday, September 10, at 4:00 p.m. and look forward to hearing your input and feedback. More information, including the location, will be forthcoming in the near future.
After the start of the academic year, we will be resuming breakfast meetings open to all faculty members in the college who would like to meet with me about topics of interest. This was a practice I instituted during my first year as dean and these breakfast meetings were held until the demand waned. Since some time has passed, I’m hoping that there will be renewed interest and I look forward to speaking with many of you. More information will be shared later this summer about how to sign up for these breakfasts.
