Message from the Dean
I’d like to encourage our faculty to take note of the topics listed below and to participate in these activities.
New College of Medicine Academy of Medical Educators
I am pleased to announce the creation of the College of Medicine Academy of Medical Educators, which has been established to provide a forum for higher levels of participation, training, and recognition of faculty educators and to promote excellence, innovation, and scholarship in teaching and education. Drs. Leonie Gordon, Debra Hazen-Martin, and Paul McDermott are serving as Co-Directors of this new initiative, and I am very appreciative of all of the effort that has gone into creating this resource. Faculty are invited to apply for membership as a Distinguished Teaching Scholar, Master Teacher, or Mentored Teaching Fellow – the application deadline is August 20, 2012.

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Chair Candidates
The search committee for the Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, chaired by Dr. Scott Reeves, has released the names of four additional candidates invited to interview for this position. Dr. Bradley Weiner, Professor and Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College; Chief of Spinal Surgery, The Methodist Hospital and Director, Spine Advanced Technology Laboratory, The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, is scheduled to visit August 15–16. Dr. Vincent Pellegrini, Jr., James Lawrence Kernan Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, is scheduled to visit August 20-21. Dr. H. Thomas Temple, Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of the University of Miami Tissue Bank, is scheduled to visit August 23-24. Dr. Rick Wright, Asa C. and Dorothy W. Jones Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Co-Chief, Sports Medicine at Washington University, is scheduled to visit August 30–31.
2012 MUSC Faculty Convocation
This year’s MUSC Faculty Convocation will be held on Tuesday, August 21, at 4:30 p.m. in 110 Drug Discovery Building, with a reception to follow. Dr. Perry Halushka will be giving this year’s keynote address on “From Discovery to Improved Therapeutics: The role of entrepreneurialism”. I hope all members of the faculty will plan to attend this event.
Faculty Bridge Funding Program
Faculty are encouraged to utilize the Bridge Funding Program, which was implemented to support investigators with established clinical or basic research programs during periods when a competitive renewal was not funded. Program details and application information can be found at http://www.musc.edu/com/research/bridgefunding.htm. The application deadline for the current cycle is August 15, 2012.
Faculty Breakfast Meetings
In order to allow for more robust conversations around central missions of the college, I have decided to target specific areas of focus – clinical, research, education, administration - for these faculty breakfast meetings. Faculty who are interested in attending should contact Beverly Carson, firstname.lastname@example.org, and indicate which area of focus is of greatest interest to them. These meetings will begin on September 6 and will typically be held on Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m.
