COLLEGE OF MEDICINE Newsroom

Message from the Dean

Etta D. Pisano, M.D.

Vice President for Medical Affairs
Dean, College of Medicine

 Dear Colleagues:

Earlier this week, MUSC Children’s Hospital was recognized by U.S. News in the 2012-2013 edition of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals.  Two of our programs are now ranked in the top 50, with our cardiology & heart surgery program again ranking in the top 20 and our gastroenterology program ranking in the top 50 for the first time.  These are wonderful accomplishments, that speak to the excellent care and service and tireless dedication of the faculty and other employees associated with these programs.  Please join me in congratulating both of these groups on this wonderful recognition of their excellence.

Dr. Wayne Rosamond, candidate for the position of Founding Chair, Department of Public Health Sciences, will be giving a seminar next Thursday, June 14, 4:00 p.m., in 100 Basic Science Building on the topic of “Myocardial Infarction Incidence and Case Fatality: Community Trends and Implications”.  Dr. Rosamond is currently Professor of Epidemiology at the Gillings School of Global Public Health and Adjunct Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.  All members of the college are invited to attend his seminar.

Every year we have the opportunity to give back to MUSC through the YES Campaign.  The YES Campaign allows employees to make a charitable gift to any fund within the MUSC Foundation, many of which benefit units within the College of Medicine.  Making your gift is easy – go to https://giving.musc.edu/yes/ to access the online giving page, where you can also find a full list of funds.  Your tax-deductible gifts can be made by payroll deduction, credit card, check, or cash.  Many thanks to those of you who have already generously pledged your support for this year’s campaign; for those who haven’t yet had an opportunity to make a donation, the campaign ends June 30 so you still have plenty of time.  If you have questions about the YES campaign, please contact Whitney McLuen at 792-1973 or mcluen@musc.edu.

The Women Scholars Initiative, with support from the Provost’s Office, is accepting nominations for the 2012 Advancement of Women Faculty Award.  The purpose of this award is to recognize the faculty member who best demonstrates excellence in his/her commitment to the advancement and promotion of women faculty at MUSC.  Nominations are due July 13; more information and nomination instructions can be found at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11318946/WSIaward.pdf.

I’d like to remind all faculty and staff in the College of Medicine and MUSC Physicians who have not already done so to please complete this year’s employee satisfaction survey.  This survey is a great opportunity to share your perceptions across a variety of key areas that affect your satisfaction, and will help us work to improve our workplace.  All survey data will be kept on a Morehead Associates server and individual survey responses will not be accessible by anyone at MUSC or MUSC Physicians.  If you have any questions or concerns about the survey process, please contact Frances Glanville (College of Medicine) or Andrea Swartz (MUSC Physicians) for assistance.

As always, I look forward to hearing from you via email or when I attend your departmental meetings.

With warm regards,

Etta
