The 2nd Year Integrated Curriculum is designed to build on those concepts that the students learned in the first preclinical year with a focus on abnormal processes, the development of disease and an introduction into disease treatment and modification. As in the first year, there are 4 year-long themes – their titles are: Altered Structure and Function, Pathogens and Host Defense, Pharmacotherapeutics and Nutrition and Fundamentals of Patient Care.

These themes are organized around six unit blocks of content.  As before, the general organization of this content is in organs systems. These themes are organized around six unit blocks of content.

The Integrated Curriculum encourages student to acquire basic science knowledge and important clinical skills such as medical interviewing and physical diagnosis in the context of patient care.  Utilizing the new state-of-the-art Simulation Center, the Standardized Patient Program and early contact with patients in clinical settings, and computer-based activities, the curriculum promotes active learning and encourages self-assessment and self-directed learning.  Small group work focuses on patient interactions, awareness of self and patient, professionalism and wellness.
