The goal of the COM is to produce caring and competent physicians capable of choosing any postgrad career. The curriculum in the first 2 years integrates basic science concepts with problem solving strategies and clinical skills. Students take histories and physicals and are introduced to the role of the physician in society. Emphasis is placed on small-group instruction and independent, self-directed learning. The 3rd year consists of clerkships in medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, family medicine, surgery, and psychiatry. Selectives in multiple disciplines are also provided for students to gain exposure to major specialty areas. The development of clinical, interpersonal, and professional competence is emphasized. In the 4th year, students are required to have additional training in surgery and internal medicine, complete an externship, and take up five elective rotations in a wide variety of subspecialties.
