Match Day 2017 - Friday, March 17th
The MUSC College of Medicine had a very successful residency match on March 17, 2017. We had a total of 171 students enter the Match. Pre-SOAP our match rate was 93.6%. At the end of the SOAP cycle, our match rate increased to 95.3% bringing us above the national average of 94.3%.
Of the specialties in which students will be pursuing their training, Categorical Internal Medicine led the way with the highest number of students at 24 (14.7% of the graduating class). Other popular specialties included: Family Medicine (8.6%), Pediatrics (8%), Emergency Medicine (8%), Anesthesia (8%), Psychiatry (6.7%), Obstetrics and Gynecology (6.7%). Students also matched into General Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiology, Pathology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Otolaryngology, Orthopedic Surgery, Urology, Neurology, Radiation Oncology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and various other surgical sub-specialties. Students continued to match at many prestigious institutions across the nation.
A total of 44 (27%) students will remain in South Carolina to complete their residency training, 31 of these right here at MUSC. Ten students (6.1%) will be completing residency through the military. Nearly 32% of the class will be entering primary care (including Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Medicine-Pediatrics), and this increases to 38.7% if Obstetrics and Gynecology is included.
