CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

The Integrated Curriculum is designed to help students learn preclinical medicine in a way that they will use it in patient care.  Students study systems of the human body from molecular processes to macroscopic structure in year-long themes that include Structure and Function, Homeostasis and Regulation, Food and Fuel and Fundamentals of Patient Care.

YEAR 1

AUGUST

JUNE

These themes are organized around units of Foundations of Medicine, Musculoskeletal system, Cardio respiratory system, GI, Renal and Genitourinary, Cognition.  The year ends with a block of Synthesis where many of the skills acquired are used to focus on patient problems.

The Integrated Curriculum encourages student to acquire basic science knowledge and important clinical skills such as medical interviewing and physical diagnosis in the context of patient care.  Utilizing the new state-of-the-art Simulation Center, the Standardized Patient Program and early contact with patients in clinical settings, and computer-based activities, the curriculum promotes active learning and encourages self-assessment and self-directed learning.  Small group work focuses on Patient interactions, awareness of self and patient, professionalism and wellness.
