Visiting Students

The Medical University of South Carolina schedules visiting medical students twelve months out of the year.  In addition to students from schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), MUSC encourages students from schools accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and students from international medical universities to apply.
The Medical University of South Carolina offers a wide number of electives and externships to medical students in the last year of their studies.

All applications are reviewed by the department(s) to which the student applies.  Students must have successfully completed the basic clerkships (internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, surgery, psychiatry, and family medicine) prior to arrival.  All approvals are at the discretion of the departments.

While we encourage students to follow the MUSC calendar, there are occasions where arrangements can be made on a case-by-case basis to accommodate students whose home schools are not on the same schedule.  The decision to accept an ‘off-cycle’ student rests with the course director.

Approval notices are sent by email and will include additional information.  Most applications are processed within 5 working days; however, we only process complete applications.

STUDENTS APPLYING FROM LCME ACCREDITED INSTITUTIONS

Applications from students from LCME accredited institutions are now being submitted through the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS).

STUDENTS APPLYING FROM SCHOOLS OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE and
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS OF MEDICINE

Students from COCA accredited institutions are encouraged to apply for rotations at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Visiting student fees for each 4 week rotation are equivalent to the tuition for the same amount of instruction time of current, in-state MUSC students.

The Medical University of South Carolina welcomes students from international medical schools.  This year visiting students represented a number of international medical schools:  Lebanon, France, Germany, South Africa, Korea, United Kingdom, and West Indies.

The Medical University of South Carolina accepts and schedules visiting medical students twelve months out of the year and for multiple rotations.   Many of our international students stay for four months (4 – 4 week rotations) to complete the requirements of their home schools.  Tuition for each rotation is currently $2,595.80 per 4-week rotation.  This is the same tuition fee paid by current 4th year MUSC in-state students.

AHEC (please note that AHEC does not accept students from international medical schools)
